Baseball Falls to Villanova, 6-1

Box Score

PLYMOUTH, Pa. - Playing its first game in the Philadelphia-area, the University of Pennsylvania baseball team fell to Villanova, 6-1 in Plymouth, Pa. on Wednesday afternoon. Penn managed just four hits on the day and suffered its fifth consecutive loss.

EARLY INNING WOES: Penn came into the game having allowed 10 runs in the first inning this season and Villanova didn't aid the Quakers cause on Wednesday, striking for a run in the first. Adam Goss got the Wildcats' offense started with a double to left-center field and later scored on a Todd Czinege single to right.

Villanova added to its advantage in the second, striking for four more runs to jump out to a 5-0 lead. The big blow came off the bat of Goss who sent a pitch over the right field wall for a two-run home run that ended Andrew Burnick's day on the mound.

PENN PUTS A RUN ON THE BOARD: The Quakers found a way to get on the board in the fourth thanks to a little help from the Wildcats. Tim Graul led off the frame by taking a pitch off his upper arm and advanced to third on a Sean Phelan single. Graul would cross the plate on a wild pitch that went to the backstop in the next at-bat to make it 5-1.

WILDCATS STRIKE BACK: In the bottom of the inning, Czinege restored Villanova's five-run lead with an RBI single back up the middle of the infield.

QUAKER NOTES: Gary Tesch added to his Ivy League-leading numbers in stolen bases when he swiped second in the first inning... The Quakers didn't help their Ivy League-leading batting average, recording just four hits, but unfortunately added to their strikeout lead, whiffing 10 more times.

UP NEXT: The Quakers play their home-opener against Binghamton in a doubleheader on Saturday afternoon beginning at noon.
