NEW HAVEN, CONN. – The University of Pennsylvania (9-5, 3-2)
forced overtime for the second straight contest but couldn't notch the
game-winner as the Yale Bulldogs (6-8, 2-3) pulled out a 3-2 win at Johnson
Field on Saturday afternoon in New Haven, Conn.
After finding themselves down 2-0 following two first half
Yale goals, the Quakers battled back from a two goal deficit, scoring both tallies
off penalty corners just 1:21 apart to tie the game at 2-2 in the second half to
push extra minutes.
Sofia Palacios was the first to get the Red and Blue on the
board just over five minutes into the second stanza to get Penn to within one
at 2-1 at the 40:08 mark. Less than two minutes later, the Quakers capitalized on
another corner, this time from Elise Tilton off an Alexa Hoover assist.
The Penn defense held steady throughout the remainder of
regulation and the Quaker offense dominated the stat sheet, taking 11 shots to
Yale's two for the period. Palacios had two opportunities in the final minutes
of the match with shots on goal but both were turned away by the Bulldog
defense.
Yale found the game-winner in the 84th minute
when Steffi Katz connected off a Danee Fitzgerald assist at 83:51 to seal the
match in favor of the hosts, 3-2.
Today's game marked the sixth overtime contest for the
Quakers this season and the fourth in six games dating back to Oct. 2 for the
Red and Blue.
Despite the outcome, Penn held a healthy advantage in shots,
21-13, and corners, 8-2, over their opposition. On the defensive end,
goalkeeper Liz Mata made nine saves while Yale's Emilie Katz tallied 12 stops
for the victory.
The Quakers return to action on Tuesday, Oct. 25 when they
take on Big 5 rival Villanova for a local matchup before coming back to Ivy
action next Saturday vs. Brown. Game time vs. the Wildcats is slated for 7 p.m.
in Conshohocken, Pa. while the Bears and Quakers will face each other at noon
on Oct. 29 at Ellen Vagelos Field.
