CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The University of Pennsylvania field hockey team opened its 2026 season on Friday night at the University of North Carolina, resulting in a 0-7 loss. Senior Ruby De Frees led the Quaker's defense, tallying seven saves.
 
The Tar Heels' aggressive offense proved why they were ranked second in the country entering this season. 

How It Happened
In the first period, the Tar Heels scored twice on 4 attempts, with goals from Grace Pottebaum and Sofia Ferri, assisted by Ella Barbacci. Followed by two more goals in the second from Coco Courtright and Charly Bruder. 

Despite the offensive pressure, senior goalkeeper Ruby De Frees had three saves on five shots in the second quarter, her highest of the game.
 
With a late surge led by Honor Roberts and a shot from Riley Thomson, the Quakers seemed to find their energy. However, it was too late to overcome the deficit created by second half goals Sofia Ferri, Molly Nussbaumer, and Charly Bruder. 

Quaker Notemeal
* De Frees had seven saves on 18 shots from the Tar Heels offense.
* Junior Riley Thomson recorded two shots, which included the only shot on goal attempt for the Quakers. 
* Darcey Chapman and Beau Lilly Barrington-Hibbert each had a shot.
