NEWARK, DEL. - Rachel Huang's score in the waning minutes of
regulation helped push overtime between the University of Pennsylvania and 8th-ranked
Delaware, but the Blue Hens captured the double-overtime, game winner in the 86th
minute to claim the non-conference win, 3-2, on Sunday.
The match marked the fifth overtime game for the Quakers
this season and the fourth that required a second period of extra-time. The Blue
Hens capitalized off a penalty corner at the 85:59 mark when Greta Nauck
tallied the game winner.
Penn fell to 9-4 overall with the loss while Delaware
improved to 13-2. It marked the first matchup between the two schools since the
2010 season.
The Quakers rallied from a 2-0 deficit following the first
20 minutes of action after two Delaware goals to start the contest. Junior
Alexa Hoover notched her ninth goal of the season in the 25th minute
to cut the Red and Blue deficit to one at 2-1 when she put home a close-range
ball from five yards out.
The score would stand at 2-1 heading into intermission, but
the Quakers defense - anchored by goalkeeper Liz Mata's career-high 14 saves –
was stingy throughout the second half. The Penn defensive unit turned away
Delaware's nine second half shots to keep the score at 2-1 as the match entered
the final minutes.
Huang's score, her fifth of the season, came off a penalty
corner in the 68th minute to tie the match at 2-2. Huang connected from
the post from Alexa Schneck's shot to send the match into overtime.
The Blue Hens couldn't
penetrate the Red and Blue defense through the first 15 minutes of overtime, as
the Quakers turned away two shots in the first stanza of extra time. With
neither team finding the back of the net, the contest entered a second extra
frame.
Delaware's Nauck notched the game-winner less than a minute
into the second period of overtime, connecting off a penalty corner at the
85:59 mark from a Marjelle Scheffers assist.
On the defensive end, Mata bested her previous career-high
with today's 14 saves. Delaware goalkeeper Emmeline Oltmans made two in the
win.
Penn will return to action next Saturday, October 22nd
when they travel to Newark, Del. to take on the Yale Bulldogs in an Ivy League
matchup. Game time is slated for Noon.
