Baseball Defeats Cornell Twice on Saturday

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

ITHACA, N.Y. – The offensive outburst in Ivy League play continued for the University of Pennsylvania baseball team on Saturday afternoon, scoring 22 runs in two games, defeating Cornell 13-8 and 9-2 in cold temperatures for April at Hoy Field.

In 10 Ivy League games thus far in 2015, the Penn offense has totaled 87 runs on 118 hits. The Quakers have 44 extra base hits in those games – 25 doubles, three triples, and 16 home runs. Additionally, the Red and Blue have totaled 82 RBI in league games.

Senior infielder Mitch Montaldo led Penn (14-10, 9-1 Ivy) offensively, as he has done so lately supplying the power. As reigning Co-Ivy Player of the Week, Montaldo would not disappoint on Saturday, hitting two three-run home runs, totaling six RBI. The two home run game is Montaldo's third this season, and he now has eight total home runs on the year.

Junior Ryan Mincher and senior Jeff McGarry each collected two RBI in the game.

Despite the victory, game one on Saturday didn't start the way Penn would have scripted it. Senior right-handed pitcher Connor Cuff was lifted from the game after completing just 1.1 innings of work. Cuff allowed four runs, while walking six. He struck out two Cornell batters.

In relief, senior Dan Gautieri threw 3.0 innings, also allowing four runs, before giving way to sophomore Nick Pedalino. The right-hander Pedalino (1-1), picked up his first victory of the season working 0.2 innings. Senior left-hander Stephen Silvestri came on to throw the last two innings, allowing just one hit.

Game two was highlighted by a dominate pitching performance by sophomore left-handed pitcher Mike Reitcheck. Picking up his fourth win, Reitcheck (4-1) completed eight innings, allowing just four hits and two runs, while striking out six.

Leading the way for the Red and Blue offense was junior outfielder Matt Greskoff, who went 4-for-4, scoring three runs, with one RBI. Jeff McGarry collected three hits, scoring a run, and driving in a run. Senior first baseman Matt McKinnon went 2-for-5 with three RBI.

The Quakers and the Big Red (8-19, 5-5 Ivy) will meet Sunday in a doubleheader, rounding out the four-game divisional series. First pitch of game one is scheduled for 12 p.m., and the game can be seen live ($) or heard for free on the Ivy League Digital Network.
