Baseball Slugs way to 11-4 Win Over Saint Peter's

PHILADELPHIA – Facing Saint Peter's University in a non-conference midweek matchup at Meiklejohn Stadium, the University of Pennsylvania baseball team slugged its way to an 11-4 victory Wednesday afternoon.

The Quakers (8-9) totaled 12 hits in the game, and were led by senior infielder Mitch Montaldo, with two home runs and three RBI, and by sophomore catcher Tim Graul, who added a home run and a base hit, while totaling three RBI.

Penn never trailed in the game, scoring runs in the first five innings. The Red and Blue jumped out to a 2-0 lead after the first inning, and then extended the lead scoring once in the second, twice in the third, twice in the fourth, and once in the fifth, before scoring its final three runs in the seventh.

On the mound, senior right-handed pitcher Dan Gautieri (1-1) started the game, throwing his scheduled four innings in picking up the victory. Gautieri allowed just two hits and one run, while striking out five Saint Peter's batters.

Behind Gautieri Penn rolled out a new pitcher every inning, throwing senior left-hander Stephen Silvestri,sophomore right-hander Jesse Roth, sophomore right-hander Andrew Burnick, freshman right-hander Bradley Wilpon, and freshman right-hander John White. On the day the Quakers staff totaled 10 strikeouts.

At the plate for Penn, junior outfielder Gary Tesch continued hitting well, collecting two hits in the game. Tesch has now totaled at least one hit in his last seven games. Junior infielder Ryan Mincher also had two hits on Wednesday, while junior outfielder Jonah Campbell drove in two runs.

Saint Peter's (2-15-1) scored one run in the fourth, one in the fifth, and two in the eighth inning. The Peacocks day was highlighted by shortstop Jon Kristoffersen, who hit a solo home run in the fourth inning and doubled in the eighth.

Penn will return to action this weekend facing Ivy League foes Yale and Brown on the road. The Quakers meet the Bulldogs first, playing a doubleheaderon Saturday, before facing the Bears in two games on Sunday. Games on both days begin at 12 p.m.
