Baseball Splits Sunday, and Series with Princeton

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

PRINCETON, N.J. – A split on Saturday, a split on Sunday, leading to a split series for the University of Pennsylvania baseball team this weekend versus Princeton.

Penn (22-14, 13-3 Ivy) split its Ivy League doubleheader with the Tigers on Sunday, falling 4-2, in game one, and bouncing back to win game two, 6-1.

The Quakers and Princeton (12-22, 7-9 Ivy) also split on Saturday, with Penn winning 2-0, before dropping game two, 6-4.

Game one saw spurts of offensive production, but not much, with both teams managing five hits each. Penn took a brief 1-0 lead in the second inning after Ryan Mincher and Rick Brebner singles put runners on first and third base. Brebner would then steal second, drawing an errant throw from Princeton's catcher sending Mincher home for the first run of the day.

The Tigers would get to Penn starter Dan Gautieri in the third inning, tallying four hits and three runs. The junior right-hander (2-5) would give up consecutive singles, followed by a walk, followed by another single, and a double. In the inning onepotential run for Princeton would be cut down on an outfield assist from Brebner, to shortstop Mincher, to catcher Austin Bossart.

The Quakers batsfell relatively silent, until the ninth inning, when Mitch Montaldo led off the inning with a solo home run to left field, his fifth of the season.

Penn stranded nine runners on base against the Tigers in game one.

Needing a win in game two, junior left-handed pitcher Ronnie Glenn (4-2) rose to the occasion, throwing six innings, allowing no runs, scattering five hits, while striking out 10 Princeton batters.

The lull of offensive production continued early into game two for both teams, until Penn broke out for three runs in the sixth inning. The Quakers loaded the bases on a Jeff McGarry single, Ryan Mincher walk, and Matt Greskoff walk. With two outs, Mike Vilardo doubled to left-center, clearing the bases, and giving Penn a 3-0 lead.

Penn added one in the seventh inning when Austin Bossart scored on a wild pitch. Princeton would also add a run in the seventh off of reliever Cody Thomson, making the game 4-1.

Senior Rick Brebner would extend the Quakers lead once more in the eighth inning, hitting a towering two-run home run to right field, making it 6-1.

After setting down the Tigers in order in the eighth, Thomson would run into trouble in the ninth inning, loading the bases with one out. Freshman Mike Reitcheck would come on and get two strikeouts, shutting down the Princeton threat, earning his fifth save of the season.

Up next, Penn will face Columbia (21-15, 13-3 Ivy) in home-and-home doubleheaders on Friday at Penn, and Saturday at Columbia. The winner of the four-game series will represent the Gehrig Division in the Ivy League Championship Series.

During the Friday doubleheader at Meiklejohn Stadium, Penn will recognize its six seniors in between games.
