Baseball Sweeps Yale in Ivy Opening Series

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

PHILADELPHIA - After having its Ivy League opening series versus Yale pushed back twice over the weekend due to rain, the University of Pennsylvania baseball team finally were able to face the Bulldogs, winning 6-1 and 11-9 on Monday afternoon at Meiklejohn Stadium.

Penn (8-10, 2-0 Ivy) took game one, 6-1, behind a masterful pitching performance by Dan Gautieri. The junior right-hander went the distance, throwing seven innings, allowing just the one run on four hits, while striking out six Yale batters.

Game two saw Penn chip away at an early Bulldogs (7-11, 0-2 Ivy) lead, led by Rick Brebner who collected four in the game, while driving in four runs.

Up next for the Quakers, will be Ivy League foe Brown, which comes into Philadelphia on Tuesday after the Bears dropped two games versus Columbia on Monday. Penn and Brown will square off in a doubleheader Tuesday, beginning at 1 p.m. Live audio and stats will be available on PennAthletics.com.

Game One
Penn jumped out to and early 2-0 lead over Yale in game one, on an Austin Bossart single in the first inning, followed by a Jeff McGarry home run, his third on the season.

The score would remain until the bottom of fourth, when Penn played add on, scoring four runs in the inning. Sophomore outfielder Matt Greskoff led off the inning with a double to right field, sophomore shortstop Ryan Mincher walked, bringing up Bossart, who singled to center to score Greskoff. With two runners on, Rick Brebner continued his hot-hitting, launching a three-run home run to right field, making the score 6-0 Quakers.

Gautieri would take a shutout into the top of the seventh inning, when he allowed his only run on the day on consecutive hits, allowing a single and a double.

Game Two
Yale jumped out to a 2-0 lead on Penn starting pitcher Ronnie Glenn in game two, before the Quakers would add one in the bottom of the first inning, after a Rick Brebner double, a wild pitch, and a RBI groundout by Jeff McGarry.

The Bulldogs would jump right back out to the lead scoring twice in the second inning and once in the third, before Penn would answer with two more runs of its own. Mike Vilardo singled, Brandon Engelhardt walked, and Austin Bossart was hit by a pitch, leading to a Brebner single that drove in two runs.

For the next three innings it was all Penn's offense, combined with freshman right-hander Jake Cousins who came on in relief of Glenn.

Cousins threw 4 1/3 innings in relief, allowing only one run, while striking out one, picking up his second win in as many appearances.

The Quakers would score two runs in the fourth, four runs in the fifth, and two runs in the sixth. Key hits for Penn came off the bats of Brebner and Engelhardt, who each homered. Penn totaled 15 hits in game two, including five extra base hits.

Junior left-hander Stephen Silvestri pitched one scoreless inning in relief.
