Baseball Slugs Way to 12-1 Win Over Villanova

Box Score

PLYMOUTH MEETING, Pa. - Totaling 18 hits and eight extra base hits, while collecting 10 RBIs, the University of Pennsylvania baseball team defeated Villanova, 12-1, on a cold, cloudy day at Villanova Ballpark at Plymouth.

Leading the way for Penn at the plate was senior outfielder Rick Brebner, who doubled three times, scoring three runs, while driving in two.

Freshman right-handed pitcher Jake Cousins picked up his first win in his fifth appearance, pitching two scoreless innings as scheduled, during the mid-week contest. Cousins allowed two hits, while striking out one Villanova batter.

The Quakers designated hitter Matt McKinnon went 2-for-4 with a triple in the second inning, later scoring, in a two-run inning for Penn (6-10).

Villanova (7-15) would hold the Quakers scoreless for two more innings, before they exploded for six runs in the top of the fifth inning that resulted in two pitching changes for the Wildcats in the inning.

In the Penn fifth, right fielder Matt Greskoff led off the inning with a single, followed by a Gary Tesch push bunt to the right side resulting in a hit. Catcher Austin Bossart would get hit by a pitch, before first baseman Jeff McGarry collected and RBI single through the right side. After a pitching change, McKinnon collected an RBI single, Montaldo walked, and Brebner doubled to score two runs. Montaldo and Brebner would later score on a passed ball and a wild pitch.

After Cousins, Penn's Brian Schwarzbach and Mitch Holtz combined for four innings of scoreless relief. The pair relied on solid defensive plays by Brebner, who made a diving run-saving catch, and middle infielders Ryan Mincher and Mike Vilardo, who turned two double plays on the day.

The Wildcats would go on to score their only run in the bottom of the seventh inning off Andrew Burnick. The freshman right-hander allowed a run before loading the bases with no outs. Left-handed reliever Stephen Silvestri came on in relief to strike out two Villanova batters and record a groundout ending the Wildcats scoring threat.

Penn would add its final three runs in the ninth, after another Brebner double and a Greskoff single, bringing up Paul Cotler who had entered the game earlier in left field. Cotler stroked a double to deep left center field for his first hit and RBIs of the season. McGarry added his second RBI of the day doubling down the left field line, scoring Cotler.

Senior reliever Pat Bet pitched a scoreless ninth to close out the win for Penn.
