Baseball Edged, 1-0, in Finale at Richmond

Box Score

RICHMOND, Va. – With little offense to be found by either team in the third and final game of the series, the University of Pennsylvania baseball team fell, 1-0, Sunday afternoon to Richmond.

In what has become an unfavorable trend for Penn (2-9) in this young season, five of the Quakers nine losses have come by one run, including two this weekend.

Penn saw it's starter Dan Gautieri throw his finest outing of the year, going six innings, scattering seven hits, allowing the one run, while striking out five. Freshman Jack Hartman, who earned his first collegiate victory earlier in the week and Delaware State, pitched two scoreless innings in relief, striking out two Richmond batters.

The Quakers managed five hits in the ballgame, with junior Jeff McGarry continuing to swing a hot bat collecting two hits. Junior Austin Bossart doubled to right field in the third inning with two outs, collecting Penn's only extra base hit.

Richmond (7-10-1) scraped across its only run in the bottom of the third inning on a base hit, stolen base, and an RBI single.

Penn returns from Virginia, and will play one more road game before playing its home opener. The Quakers will travel to Villanova on Wednesday for a 3:15 p.m. start. Penn will then host Lafayette at Meiklejohn Stadium on Saturday beginning at 12 p.m.
