RICHMOND, Va. - Sophomore shortstop Ryan Mincher tried to lead the rallying charge for the University of Pennsylvania baseball team, hitting a solo home run in the top of the ninth inning making it 5-3, in what would be the final score, as the Quakers fell in their second-straight game to Richmond, Saturday afternooon.

Penn (2-8) saw starting pitcher Ronnie Glenn throw five innings of eight hit baseball, allowing five runs – four earned – while striking out two Richmond batters.

Offensively Mincher and Mitch Montaldo hit solo home runs for the Quakers, while Mincher and Mike Vilardo each collected two hits on the day.

The Quakers fell behind 2-0 after the first inning, but were able to get one run back in the top of the third on a Jeff McGarry RBI single scoring Montaldo, who had singled to lead off the inning.

Penn would tie the game 2-2 in the fourth on a Montaldo home run to left center. In the bottom half of the inning, Richmond would regain the lead after consecutive singles, scoring one run on a fielder's choice.

Leading 3-2, the Spiders would add insurance runs in the top of the fifth inning on a two-run home run.

The score would remain 5-2, until the ninth, on the strength of two scoreless relief innings from senior Cody Thomson, and a combined scoreless inning from junior Stephen Silvestri, and freshman Jake Cousins.

Mincher's solo home run in the top of the ninth inning would push Penn as close as it would get, falling 5-3.

Penn and Richmond (6-10-1)will conclude their series Sunday at 12 p.m. The start time for the final game was moved up one hour earlier, with the decision coming Saturday afternoon, in attempt to conclude the game before the threat of rain.
