DOVER, Del. – On the second road trip of three during spring break, the University of Pennsylvania baseball team swept a doubleheader against Delaware State Tuesday, winning 4-1 and 17-9.

The game one victory for Penn was the first for Head Coach John Yurkow, after taking over the program this past summer. Yurkow had been an assistant for the Quakers, for the past seven years.

Game One
Doing it with the bat and glove, junior first baseman Jeff McGarry, made a spectacular run-saving play in the field and hit a home run at the plate, pushing Penn (1-6) to its first win of the season, 4-1, over the Hornets.

Senior right-hander Cody Thomson picked up the victory for Penn in relief of starter Jake Cousins. Freshman Mike Reitcheck closed the game out for the Quakers, earning his first save.

Defense did the heavy lifting early for the Quakers keeping Delaware State ( ) off the scoreboard. Penn turned bases loaded double plays to end the first and third innings, only allowing one run. The Hornets left 10 runners stranded in the game.

Penn trailed 1-0 after three innings, when Austin Bossart singled to lead off the fourth. After a Marshall Harden strikeout, Rick Brebner singled through the right side sending Bossart to third. Junior Jeff McGarry then legged out an infield single to short, scoring Bossart.

The Quakers would score again in the sixth on a high-arcing solo home run over the left field fence by McGarry.

In the seventh inning, Harden would single to right scoring Gary Tesch and Connor Betbeze for two insurance runs.

Reitcheck, in his second inning of work, surrounded a Hornets single with a ground ball out and two strikeouts, to earn the save.

Game Two
The Quaker offense exploded in game two of the doubleheader, scoring 17 runs on 14 hits, including three home runs. Penn (2-6) defeated Delaware State 17-9.

The 17 runs for the Quakersare the most since April 17, 2010 in a 17-2 Ivy League win over Cornell.

Penn's home runs came from Jeff McGarry, his second of the day, Ryan Mincher and Matt McKinnon. McGarry and McKinnon both collected two hits apiece, along with a combined seven RBI.

Other Quakers with two hits were, Marshall Harden, Matt Greskoff, and Mitch Montaldo.

Penn left-handed pitcher Jack Hartman was efficient in his first collegiate start, going five innings, allowing two runs on three hits, while striking out two, good enough for the freshman's first career victory.

Holding a 17-2 lead after six innings, the Quakers allowed Delaware State back in the game briefly, giving up three runs in the seventh and four runs in the eight, making it 17-9. Sophomore reliever Mitch Holtz shut the door on the Hornets, pitching a scoreless ninth, securing Penn's second straight win.

Up Next: Penn will head south to Richmond, Va. to take on the University of Richmond in a three-game series over the upcoming weekend. The first of three games is scheduled for 3 p.m. Friday, followed by a 1 p.m. Saturday start, finishing up on Sunday at 1 p.m.
