Baseball Edged by Princeton

PHILADELPHIAThe Quakers mounted a comeback in the late stages of the first game of a doubleheader with Princeton on Saturday, scoring twice in the sixth and once in the seventh to send the game to extra innings. However, in the ninth, an RBI-groundout from Princeton's nine-hitter proved to be the difference in a 5-4 Tiger win.

In the finale of the doubleheader, The Tigers pounced for five runs over the first five innings, and staved another Penn rally late, holding on for a 7-4 win.

Penn is now 12-21 on the year and 1-13 in the Ivy League.

In game one, Todd Roth allowed four runs over seven innings while striking out seven to give Penn a chance to rally. Adrian Lorenzo was 2-for-4 with an RBI. Derek Vigoa plated the tying run with a two-out double in the seventh to score Tom Grandieri. The Quakers had two on with two out in the seventh, but a fielder's choice from William Gordon ended the chance to win the game.

In game two, Gordon was 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles and an RBI. Grandieri scored two runs in the second game and Will Davis hit his fifth home run of the season in the ninth to close the gap to three runs.

Grandieri started and took the loss, dropping his record to 1-4. He allowed only two earned runs, but it was the three unearned runs that did the most damage as Penn committed five errors in the game.

The Quakers struggled at the plate as well for most of the game, striking out 12 times – including 10 Ks from Princeton starter Brad Gemberling, the Ivy League strikeout leader.

Gemberling went eight innings, allowing two runs (one earned) with zero walks.

The eight doubles from Penn on the day gives the Red and Blue 81 this season and ranks fourth all-time for a Penn club. Vigoa's 13 doubles ties him for fifth-most in a season by a Penn player.

The Quakers and Tigers are back in action on Sunday at noon at Meiklejohn Stadium for a doubleheader.
