Baseball Swept by Dartmouth

Dartmouth 5, Penn 1 (Game One)

Dartmouth 4, Penn 3 (Game Two)

HANOVER ? Penn scored in the first inning of both games against Dartmouth on Sunday, but the Big Green rallied in each game for the win ? and a sweep of a doubleheader in Hanover.

Game one ended 5-1 in favor of the Big Green and game two saw a 4-3 win for Dartmouth.

The Quakers scored the first run of game one on a RBI single from William Gordon that scored Steve Gable from second. Penn had a chance to score more runs in the first inning, but a pair of groundouts left two runners on.

Dartmouth tied the game in the bottom of the first on a sacrifice fly from Damon Wright. The Big Green also had two runners on in the inning, but Jeremy Maas was able to induce a fly out and a strikeout to escape the jam.

Dartmouth took the lead in the third inning with some small ball. With two outs, Wright singled to right and then advanced to second via a wild pitch. Michael Pagliarulo reached on an infield single with Wright moving to third. Nick Santomauro then singled back up the middle to drive in Wright for a 2-1 lead.

Penn had chances to tie the game in the fourth and fifth innings, but left runners on base in both frames.

Dartmouth extended its lead with three runs in the sixth inning. Santomauro walked to start the inning. After Jason Blydell reached on a fielder's choice, Jack Monahan ground into another fielder's choice. Gable's throw was wild and all three men were safe. A wild pitch from Maas scored Santomauro. Johnathon Santopadre then singled up the middle to score Blydell. Shortstop Erik Bell added the final run of the game with a base hit to left field.

Game two started out the same as game one for the Quakers, with Gable scoring on a hit from Gordon. This time, Gordon doubled to left center to score Gable.

Dartmouth again rallied to take the lead in the bottom of the second with their second three-run inning of the doubleheader. The Big Green scored the three runs without a hit as Paul Cusick had trouble finding the plate.

He started the inning by hitting Santomauro. After a pair of fielder's choices had one runner on with two outs, Cusick lost command of his pitches. He walked five men in a row to score two runs. The third run then scored on a passed ball.

Penn got one of the runs back in the fourth inning on a sacrifice fly from Jeff Cellucci. A walk to Dan Williams sandwiched between singles by Matt Toffaletti and Adrian Lorenzo had loaded the bases before the junior catcher knocked in his third run of the season.

Dartmouth upped its lead back to three in the sixth with a single from Jason McManis that scored Blydell. The run, charged to Robbie Seymour, was unearned as Blydell reached on an error by Gordon.

Seymour pitched six innings in relief of Cusick, allowing just the one unearned run on two hits while striking out five Big Green hitters.

Unfortunately for Penn, the unearned run proved to be the difference. In the seventh inning, Tom Grandieri scored Cellucci with a sacrifice fly to center. Penn had the possible tieing run on third base in Michael Gatti, but Gordon struck out looking to end the inning.

The Red and Blue had chances to tie or take the lead in the eighth and ninth innings as well, leaving two runners on in the eighth before stranding Grandieri at first in the ninth.

The two losses drop Penn's record to 9-11 and 1-4 in Ivy play. Dartmouth is now 12-8 overall and is 6-0 in Ivy games.
