PHILADELPHIA – The Quakers' field hockey team fell to No. 3 Princeton at Ellen Vagelos Field on Friday afternoon.

The Quakers held the Tigers scoreless through the first half, marking just the second time in five games this season that Princeton has been held without a goal before halftime. Penn's defense continued to keep the game within reach through three quarters before Princeton finally broke through in the fourth.

In goal, Ruby de Frees kept the Quakers in the game with a series of key saves, including a huge stop on a direct penalty stroke from Princeton's top goal-scorer, Pru Lindsey, allowing the goal deficit to stay at one.

*Penn's four penalty corners resulted in three penalty strokes, with Maxi Aranowitz and Riley Thomson each earning opportunities from the spot.

*Princeton held a 24-4 advantage in shots, but Penn's defensive effort kept the Tigers' lead at just one goal heading into the final minutes.

How It Happened
The Quakers and Tigers battled through a scoreless opening quarter. Princeton generated early pressure, but de Frees turned away an attempt from Lindsey to keep the game level. Penn also earned a penalty corner that resulted in a penalty stroke for Maxi Aranowitz, but Princeton goalkeeper, Olivia Caponiti, denied the opportunity.

Princeton continued to push offensively in the second frame, earning a penalty stroke, but the Red and Blue's defense and de Frees kept the Tigers off the board. Penn and Princeton went into halftime locked at 0-0.

The defensive battle for the Quakers continued into the third quarter. Princeton created several chances to score, but Penn's defense halted their attempts. The Quakers earned two penalty corners, while the opposing team continued to test de Frees, who made multiple saves to send the game to the fourth period still tied at 0-0.

The Tigers finally broke through in the fourth quarter, as Tabby Vaughan converted a penalty stroke to give the Tigers a 1-0 lead.
 
With 5:49 remaining, Princeton was awarded a direct penalty stroke, taken by Lindsey, their top goal-scorer. de Frees came up with a massive block, keeping Penn within one and giving the Quakers a chance to equalize.

In attempt for a late goal to level the field, the Red and Blue pulled de Frees from goal in an attempt to generate a man-up opportunity. The Quakers continued to battle but were unable to find the equalizer as Princeton held on for the 1-0 victory.

The Quakers (1-3, 0-1 Ivy League) will travel on the road for their next three matchups. Penn will find themselves in Towson, Md. To face Towson on Sunday, Sept. 20, before traveling north Hanover, N.H. on Sept. 25 for another Ivy League matchup with Dartmouth. The Quakers' final test on the road before they return home will be against neighbors Drexel on Sept. 27.
