PHILADELPHIA – The University of Pennsylvania baseball team wraps up its regular season slate this weekend as it hosts Brown for a crucial matchup that will likely decide the Ivy League's regular-season champion. The series begins with a single game at 2 p.m. on Friday at Tommy Lasorda Field at Meiklejohn Stadium and continues with a doubleheader on Saturday set to start at 11:30 a.m.
The Quakers recently claimed a share of the top spot in the conference standings (12-6), after sweeping Harvard across three games last weekend.
The visitors are right on pace with the Red and Blue in the conference standings, boasting a 12-6 record and were the first Ancient Eight member to clinch a postseason berth. Yale also secured its place in the postseason by avoiding a sweep against Columbia last weekend.

The Series
In 178 meetings between the conference foes, Penn holds the all-time series lead with a record of 92-81-5. Brown captured the series victory last season with a 12-inning 7-6 victory in Game 2 before Penn bounced back in the finale with a 5-2 triumph. Prior to the pair of losses in 2025, the Quakers were on a nine-game winning streak that stemmed back to the 2022 campaign. W. Joseph Blood Head Coach
John Yurkow's group has not dropped a meeting with the Bears in University City since 2019.
The first matchup between both programs took place on May 15, 1885, and the visitors came away with a dominant 20-3 win in Philadelphia.Â
At the Plate
*
Gavin Degnan paces the hosts at the dish through 37 games with a .293 batting average and 44 hits. He's also the team leader in RBI (35), doubles (11), total bases (77), and slugging percentage (.513). The junior's six home runs rank eighth in the Ivy League and he leads his conference foes in at-bats this season (150).
*Freshman infielder
Jay Secretarski has also been a consistent threat at the dish for Penn and is one of three players to start in all 37 games. The Asheville, N.C. native has logged 41 hits, 10 doubles, 23 RBI, and 30 runs scored, while his 26 walks and 19 stolen bases come in at third and fourth place in the conference, respectively. Â
*Pokrovsky tied the program record for career doubles (50) at Harvard last Saturday, matching the mark set by program great Wyatt Henseler '24. He's hitting .284 this season and has registered 40 hits, 17 RBI, and 24 runs scored through 35 starts. Pokrovsky is already the Quakers' and Ivy League's single-season doubles record holder, following his 24 doubles registered last year.
*One of the conference's most feared long-ball threats,
Nick Spaventa, enters the series with a .277 batting average and his seven homers this season are tied for second in the Ancient Eight. The junior's 32 RBI and .500 slugging percentage rank eighth and ninth in the conference, and his 10 doubles place 10
th.
*
Ernie Echevarria (.264), Taylor (.254),Â
Jack Warner (.244), andÂ
Gavin Collins (.231) round out the hosts' batters who enter the weekend hitting above .200.
On the Mound
*Shurtleff paces the Ivy League with six wins on the mound this season, while his 3.05 ERA and 59.0 innings pitched rank third and fourth. The right-hander has struck out 50 batters in 10 appearances and allowed only 14 walks over that stretch. In his last two games, Shurtleff tallied a career-high 10 strikeouts that led the Red and Blue to crucial wins on the road at Princeton (4/18) and Harvard (4/25).
*High-volume armsÂ
Jake Moss (3-2, 6.05) andÂ
Marty Coyne (5-4, 4.12) remain as crucial members of Penn's pitching staff. The upperclassmen duo has combined for 100.2 innings pitched and 92 strikeouts this campaign, and Coyne leads the hosts with 52 Ks. The Hockessin, Del. native boasts a 4.12 ERA, which ranks ninth in the conference and has been especially good at limiting free passes, walking just 10 batters in 2026.
*Freshman left-hander
Ben Moulin (2-2, 2.96) had a breakout performance in the team's 7-6 win at Harvard last Sunday. He tossed career-bests of five innings and six strikeouts, while allowing zero runs and three hits in his seventh start on the bump.
*Over recent weeks, Pitching Coach
Josh Schwartz has adjusted to using openers as part of his rotation.
Nick Newburn,
Connor Darling, and Moulin are expected to receive the starting nods.
*In the field, Penn continues to boast the highest fielding percentage in the Ivy League (.975), having recorded only 34 errors on the year.
Scouting the Bears
Brown enters the matchup with a 20-16 record and lost two of its three games against Cornell last weekend. The visitors bounced back with a 16-8 victory over Columbia on Wednesday and won the remainder of their conference series this year against Yale, Princeton, Harvard, and Dartmouth. Their 16-4 victory last Saturday against the Big Red secured the program's first postseason appearance since the 2007 season.
Through 36 games, six hitters are batting .270 or better for the visitors, including: Mika Petersen (.362), Matt Luigs (.310), Alex Beenevento (.301), Mark Henshon (.296), Logan Meusy (.275), and DJ Dillehay (.273).
Petersen paces the Ivy League with a .607 slugging percentage and his .379 average at the dish ranks second. His 55 hits and .452 on-base percentage also place within the top three of their respective categories this season. Dillehay has driven in a conference second-best 40 runs in 2026 and Petersen is right on his tail with 35. Luigs is also a big threat for the Bears as his 46 hits, three triples, and 18 stolen bases all rank within the top 10 among his Ivy foes.
The visitors' pitching has been a strong factor in their 2026 success, led by ace Dylan Reid (4-3, 3.35). He's started in eight of his 10 appearances this season and has racked up 39 strikeouts in 45.2 innings pitched while holding opposing batters to a .216 average. Reid hasn't done it alone as Drew Nelson (5-2, 3.92) and Peter Dubie (3-4, 4.31) have also been reliable for longer outings. Dubie leads the trio with 56 Ks and together they've combined for over 56 percent (131-232) of the team's strikeouts this season. All three of their ERAs sit in the top 10 among their Ancient Eight competition.
Senior right-hander Olivia Pichardo made NCAA history during Brown's 16-4 win over Cornell last Saturday, becoming the first woman to pitch in a Division I baseball game.
The Bears boast a conference-best 4.27 team ERA, and they're the only Ivy League team yet to allow over 200 runs this season (189). Their 232 strikeouts are the second-lowest mark in the conference, but they hold opposing batters to a .254 average.
