Heavyweights Home Saturday, Host Harvard and Navy in Adams Cup Racing

PHILADELPHIA - The University of Pennsylvania heavyweight rowing team continues its cup season on Saturday morning, hosting Harvard and Navy on the Schuylkill River. The Adams Cup will be on the line in the Varsity Eights race.

Harvard has dominated this competition through the years, with 61 wins compared to just 16 for Penn and 14 by Navy. The Crimson have won every race this century, the Quakers' last victory coming in 1999 while the Midshipmen's came in 1996. Last year, Harvard earned a three-second victory over second-place Penn on the Charles River in Boston, the Quakers besting Navy by nearly ten seconds..

In the latest IRCA/IRA polls, released Wednesday, the top three boats for Saturday's racing were ranked respectively…

2V8: Harvard 1st, Penn 8th, Navy 16th

Adams Cup History
On May 27, 1933, the varsity crews of Harvard, Navy and Penn met on the Charles River with a new cup as the prize for the victor. The perpetual trophy honors Charles Francis Adams, a Harvard graduate and Secretary of the Navy, and was placed into competition by these three institutions. Harvard, Navy and Penn had engaged in the same regatta since 1928 without an award. In 1932, the regatta was held in Annapolis, Md., and Harvard's Eskey Clark, Navy's Commander James L. Hall Jr., and Penn's C. Louis Borie III conceived the idea of the perpetual trophy.
