WORCESTER, Mass. – The University of Pennsylvania heavyweight crews wrapped up competition at the EARC Sprints, earning a spot in the grand final in four of five races Sunday evening.
The Fourth and Fifth Varsity crews were the highlight of the day for the Quakers, with both coming home with bronze medals in their respective races. The Fourth crew clocked a 6:00.938 while the Fifth clocked a 6:15.738. The bronze medals for the two crews are significant, as they are the first medals Penn has earned at the Sprints since 2006.
The Third and First Varsity crews earned spots in their grand finals, clocking times of 6:15.3 (sixth place) and 5:51.8 (fourth place), respectively. The Second Varsity crew placed second in their petite final with a time of 5:51.7 after coming just .006 seconds shy of earning a spot in the grand final.
Penn finished fifth overall and fourth in the Ivy League at the Sprints. The fourth-place finish is the best finish the Quakers have had since 2001. The Quakers finished third in combined team points (lightweight and heavyweight) at the Sprints as well.
Additionally, senior Thomas Schreiber was named Penn's Academic All-Ivy selection, highlighting his efforts on the water and in the classroom.
