PHILADELPHIA – Senior co-captain
Thomas Shurtleff and junior infielder
Nick Spaventa were named the Ivy League's Pitcher and Player of the Week on Monday, the conference office announced.
Shurtleff earned pitcher of the week laurels for the second-straight week, following his seven-inning shutout at Princeton on Saturday. He finished the contest with a career-high 10 strikeouts and did not walk a single Tiger in 26 batters faced. Shurtleff's seven Ks two weeks ago against Cornell were a career best, but he continued to reach new heights this past week to guide Penn to its ninth Ancient Eight victory of the season. The Medfield, Mass. native ranks third in the conference with a 3.12 ERA this campaign and his five wins also place third.
Spaventa had a monster week at the plate across four games, notching eight hits, seven RBI, a run scored, and two doubles. The junior paces the Quakers with a .288 batting average, and leads the team in hits (38), RBI (29), home runs (6), and doubles (10). Spaventa's .515 slugging percentage and 29 RBI rank third and fifth among his Ivy foes. During the series finale on Saturday, the Pitman, N.J. native went 4-for-5 at the dish and drove in two runs with doubles in the first and third innings. His selection marked the second time this season he received the award.
The Red and Blue now prepare for a shot at the Liberty Bell Classic title at 4 p.m. Tuesday as they face Saint Joseph's at Citizens Bank Park. Penn then turns to Harvard for continued Ivy League action on the road over the weekend.
