Baseball Ventures to Yale to Continue Ivy League Play

PHILADELPHIA – The University of Pennsylvania baseball team continues Ivy League play in New Haven, Conn. this weekend for a three-game series versus Yale.

The Quakers currently sit atop the conference standings, after sweeping Dartmouth last weekend to get off to a 3-0 start. The Bulldogs earned an initial 14-7 victory over Brown to begin their league slate, prior to dropping the final two games to move to 1-2.

The Series
Yale leads the all-time series with a record of 122-102-3. Over the last 10 meetings, the series is split 5-5, but the Bulldogs took three of the four matchups last season.

The Quakers hold a 3-2 advantage in New Haven across the last five meetings, but the two latest contests at George H.W. Bush '48 Field were won by the hosts. Both squads hold winning records at home with a 60-47-1 record for the Red and Blue and a 71-42-2 mark for Yale.

The series began on April 27, 1886, when Yale claimed a 13-3 victory in Philadelphia.

At the Plate
*Junior catcher Qwynn Ahearn continues to lead Penn with a .400 batting average among players that have appeared in 10 or more games this season. The Woodbine, Md. native also paces the Quakers with a .514 on-base percentage, and he's rung up 12 hits, eight RBIs and two home runs. 

*Jay Secretarski has had a steady start to his collegiate career in University City, holding a .274 batting average, and leads the Ivy League in walks (15). The Asheville, N.C. native has started in all 18 games this season and has registered 17 hits, 11 runs scored, four doubles, three RBIs and 21 total bases.

*Outfielder Gavin Degnan paces the Red and Blue with 18 hits, five doubles, three home runs and 19 RBIs, all while hitting .269 at the dish. The junior's .507 slugging percentage ranks fifth in the conference and his RBI total comes in at fourth.

*Co-captain Jarrett Pokrovsky has found his swing lately, now holding a .225 batting average with 16 hits and four doubles. The Pittsgrove, N.J. native made a great start to Ivy League play last weekend, recording two hits and an RBI in each game against Dartmouth.

*Ryan Taylor (.232), Gavin Collins (.220), Nick Spaventa (.211) and Jack Warner (.212) enter the slate all batting above .200.

On the Mound
*The Quakers used seven pitchers in their midweek loss to La Salle, which included a third start for freshman left-hander Ben Moulin (1-2, 4.82).

*Marty Coyne (2-2) boasts an Ivy League leading 2.70 ERA through four starts this season and has thrown a conference-high 30.0 innings. The Hockessin, Del. native's 26 strikeouts come in at fifth in the league, while pacing his conference foes in strikeouts looking (10).

*Seniors Jake Moss (2-1, 4.91) and Thomas Shurtleff (2-2, 4.50) are expected to start for the Red and Blue over the weekend, as they both rank within the top 10 of the Ivy League in innings pitched (25.2 & 24.0). Moss has struck out 23 batters this season through five appearances, which ranks eighth in the conference.

*Freshman right-hander Nick Newburn is the only Penn pitcher to have thrown more than nine innings (9.2) and still boasts an ERA under 1.0 (0.93).

*Aidan von Zuben, Newburn, Moulin, Connor Darling and Josh Katz continue to serve as the Quakers' primary relievers.

*Penn's pitching staff enters the three-game set leading the Ivy League with a 4.52 ERA, allowing a conference-second-best 91 runs this season.

Scouting the Bulldogs
Yale prepares to host Penn holding a 10-8 record and is coming off a tight victory at Iona on Wednesday (7-6). Prior to their 1-2 start in Ivy League play last weekend against Brown, the Bulldogs had won three of their last five, notching a pair of victories against Albany and one against Sacred Heart.

Through the first month of the season, six hitters are batting over .250, including Kaiden Dossa (.359), Garrett Larsen (.343), Chris Diprima (.319), Colin Sloan (.300), Jack Dauer (.290) and Bryce Miller (.266). Larsen leads the pack with 24 hits, and his 13 stolen bases lead the Ivy League, while Dossa paces the hosts with 22 RBIs, 40 total bases and a .625 slugging percentage.

Dossa (23), Diprima (22), Sloan (21), and Dauer (20) have all tallied 20 or more hits this campaign.

From the bump, Ben Winslow (1-3) and Tate Evans (2-1) currently lead Yale with 3.08 and 3.09 ERAs. Winslow (35), Evans (27) and Jack Ohman (31) rank first, second and third in the Ivy League in strikeouts, while Ohman holds opposing batters to a conference-leading .160 batting average.

Daniel Cohen (1-2, 6.97) and Ohman have made four starts on the mound and Alex Hwang (1-1, 7.23) leads the hosts with six. Evans, Winslow, Ethan Lewis (0-0, 4.91) and Brett Faccio (1-0, 7.36) are expected to be Yale's primary relievers throughout the series.

The Bulldogs' pitching staff boasts a 5.18 ERA through 18 games, despite pacing its fellow Ivies in innings pitched (163.1). Yale's starters have given up 71 runs this season and the entire staff is responsible for a conference-leading 166 strikeouts.
