PHILADELPHIA - The University of Pennsylvania men's and women's track and field teams concluded day one of the Penn Classic on Friday breaking both the men's and women's 4x800m school record.
Tiago Socarras,
Benjamin Markham,
Nicholas DeVita, and
Nicolas Pizarro shattered the men's relay record from 1977 (7:30.3h) clocking a time of 7:22.43, fastest time in the Ivy League this season.
The men's 4x800m world record fell Clay Pender, Luke Houser, Luciano Fiore, and Sean Dolan of team USA crossed the finish line at 7:10.29.
L'Mio Edwards,
Alexa Matora, Maggie McCabe, and
Quin Stovall placed first in the women's relay with a time of 8:43.38. The women's team currently ranks first in the Ivy League, nearly 15 seconds faster than second place.
Freshman
Thomas Bucks claimed first in the men's pole vault clearing the bar at a personal-best height of 5.10m (16' 8.75'). Bucks started the day jumping clean through 4.80m (15' 9").
Mikaela Lyri placed third in the women's long jump with a personal-best first round mark of 5.93m (19' 5.50"). Lyri's mark ranks sixth on the program's all-time top 10 list.
Takunda Mhete made his season-debut in the long jump recording a first round mark of 7.13m (23' 4.75"), placing second.
Day Two of the Penn Classic is scheduled to begin at 12:15 p.m. with the women's 3000m.
