Lightweight Four Garners Bronze in Saturday Action at IRA Nationals

CHERRY HILL, N.J. – The University of Pennsylvania men's lightweight crew earned its first medals of the weekend on Saturday afternoon at the IRA National Championships, as the Varsity Four took third place in its Grand Final.

It was the first of what Penn hopes will be a clean sweep of hardware this weekend, as the Varsity Eight and Second Varsity Eight row in their Grand Finals on Sunday. The three-day IRA Championships are taking place this weekend on the Cooper River.

V4A (Grand Final – Saturday)
Penn led at the 500, 1000 and 1500 marks but couldn't hold on in the final 500 as both Georgetown and Mercyhurst ran the Quakers down. The Hoyas ended up beating the Lakers by a half-second, and the Lakers bettered Penn by two seconds. The Red and Blue were able to hold off Harvard for third place by three-tenths of a second.
