Postseason Bound
For the third straight season, Penn is headed back to the Ivy League Tournament after clinching a spot after one win over Columbia last weekend.
Penn, Columbia, and Yale have already solidified three of the four spots in the field, waiting on either Harvard (8-9), Dartmouth (8-10), Princeton (6-11), or Cornell (6-12) to capture the fourth spot.
Since the ILT was established ahead of the 2023 season, the Quakers have claimed back-to-back titles and NCAA regional berths. Penn will have an opportunity to advance to the NCAA Championship for a third straight year, which would set a program record and be the first time in Ivy history since Columbia from 2013-15.
Double Trouble
The record books are being rewritten as we speak! Two Penn sluggers have a shot at history this weekend when they take the field in Providence.
After doubling in Penn's 12-2 victory over Wagner on Wednesday afternoon,
Jarrett Pokrovsky tied the program and Ivy League's single-season doubles record with his 22nd of the year. One more will set the record, held by Penn's Tom Grandieri from 2010.
Pokrovsky has tallied at least one double in three consecutive games and five of his last six, registering eight two-baggers during that six-game span.
Notably, the junior leads the nation in doubles per game average (0.61) and is ranked fourth in total doubles, two off the lead currently held by Kent State's Hayden Jatszak (24).
In addition,
Davis Baker heads into the weekend currently at 48 career doubles, two shy of tying, three from passing
Wyatt Henseler's program-record 50 set in 2024.
Coaching Milestone
A sweep of the Bears this weekend would capture the W. Joseph Blood Head Coach
John Yurkow's 250th career victory.
Currently at 247 after a win over Wagner, three more wins would make Yurkow just the third head coach in Penn history to reach the 250-win milestone.
He's ranked third in all-time wins behind just Bob Seddon (634 from 1971-2005) and Walter Cariss (309 from 1920-43).
Championship Scenarios
Penn can't clinch a share of the Ivy League title this week, with Yale on a bye week until next weekend's series at Dartmouth.
But they can certainly put themselves in a position to do so with three wins over Brown this weekend.
The Quakers (12-6) are one game behind both Columbia and Yale (13-5) with both opponents holding the head-to-head tiebreaker. The only way Penn can host the Ivy League Tournament at Tommy Lasorda Field would be to beat Brown three times and hope both the Lions and Bulldogs drop two-out-of-three games in their final series.
The Red and Blue just needs to gain a game back to obtain a share of their 10th Ivy League title in program history.
The Brown Series
Penn holds an all-time series record of 91-79-5 against Brown since the first matchup back in 1885.
The Quakers are riding a series-best nine-game winning streak against the Bears since 2022 and have swept the last three series in 2022, 2023, and 2024.
Penn has not dropped a game in Providence since losing twice on March 24, 2018.
Brown has a 50-42-2 lead at home in the series history.
At The Plate
Five Quakers are hitting above .300 on the year led by Pokrovsky (.347),
Gavin Collins (.333),
Nick Spaventa (.307),
Ernie Echevarria (.303), and Baker (.300).
Collins is batting .397 in 18 Ivy contests, currently ranked third among Ancient Eight hitters. Pokrovsky is close by at .378 with
Connor Chavez hitting .370.
As mentioned earlier, Pokrovsky has 22 doubles to lead the conference this season, tied for the single-season record. It's also the fourth-best mark in the nation, while boasting the NCAA Division I lead in doubles per game at 0.61.
Baker leads the Quakers in home runs with eight after hitting another one on Wednesday vs. Wagner. He also leads the team in RBIs with 36 and is slugging .587.
Ryan Taylor swiped two more bags to increase his season stolen base total to 17, eight from tying, nine from passing Doug Glanville's single-season record of 25 set back in 1989. Taylor is ranked fifth all-time in program history in stolen bases at 39, the most in a career since Glenn Ambrosius (1997-00).
On The Mound
Penn pitching has been a bright spot this season, even after season-ending injuries to key starter
Sebastian Haggard (2-1, 3.86 ERA) and key reliever
John Cerwinski (1-1, 2.53).
The Quakers have relied heavily on weekend starters
Noah Millikan (0-2, 5.48),
Josh Katz (4-3, 8.01), and
Will Tobin (2-3, 6.10).
Katz leads the team in strikeouts with 45 after he punched out eight Lions on Sunday vs. Columbia. He's only allowed 11 walks in 39.1 innings this season.
Millikan has similar numbers to Katz with 44 strikeouts and 18 walks in 47.2 innings, which leads the team.
In the bullpen, Penn turns to
Thomas Shurtleff (2-3, 2.92) who is tied for the Ivy League lead in saves with four.
Jake Moss (1-0, 3.14),
Marty Coyne (3-1, 4.58), and
Connor Darling (0-1, 6.05) have been standouts in relief situations as of late.
Scouting The Bears
Brown has had a rough go this season, entering its final weekend of the regular season with an overall record of 9-27 and a conference mark of 5-13, currently in eighth place.
The Bears come into the weekend on a five-game losing streak after dropping a mid-week contest to Rhode Island, a three-game series vs. Harvard, and then an 11-1 decision to Holy Cross—the Patriot League Regular Season champions—on Tuesday.
At the plate, Mika Petersen leads the team with a batting average of .362, totaling 50 hits, nine doubles, two homers, and 20 RBIs. Gunner Boree leads the Bears with six home runs, while DJ Dillehay has driven in a team-best 27 runs.
On the mound, Brown is led by starting pitchers Santhosh Gottam (2-4, 6.91 ERA), Luke Trout (0-6, 7.71) and Christian Keel (1-7, 8.63). Keel leads the team in strikeouts with 48.
