Non-Conference, Home Slate Wraps Wednesday When Baseball Hosts Wagner

PHILADELPHIA – Playing in its final regular season home game and non-conference game of 2025, the University of Pennsylvania baseball team hosts Wagner Wednesday afternoon at Tommy Lasorda Field at Meiklejohn Stadium. First pitch is set for 3 p.m. and will be streamed live on ESPN+.

The Quakers have had some rough moments in Ivy play the last two weekends, dropping back-to-back series to Yale and Columbia with just three conference games remaining. Penn clinched a spot in the Ivy League Tournament for a third consecutive year, aiming to get back to its third straight NCAA regional.

Postseason Bound
For the third straight season, Penn is headed back to the Ivy League Tournament after clinching a spot after one win over Columbia last weekend.

Penn, Columbia, and Yale have already solidified three of the four spots in the field, waiting on either Harvard (8-9), Dartmouth (8-10), Princeton (6-11), or Cornell (6-12) to capture the fourth spot.

Since the ILT was established ahead of the 2023 season, the Quakers have claimed back-to-back titles and NCAA regional berths. Penn will have an opportunity to advance to the NCAA Championship for a third straight year, which would set a program record and be the first time in Ivy history since Columbia from 2013-15.

Double Trouble
Two Penn sluggers have a shot at history this week when they take the field.

Davis Baker heads into Wednesday's matchup with Wagner at 48 career doubles, two shy of tying, three from passing Wyatt Henseler's program-record 50 set in 2024.

Jarrett Pokrovsky is nearing the program and Ivy League's single-season doubles, just one from tying, two from passing Penn's Tom Grandieri's mark of 22 from 2010.

Six of Pokrovsky's eight base hits last week were two-baggers, hitting .500 (8-for-16) on the week with seven RBIs, all against Rider last Wednesday.

The Wagner Series
Wednesday marks just the seventh matchup between Penn and Wagner all time with the Quakers holding a 5-1 mark in the series.

Penn swept Wagner in three games at Tommy Lasorda Field at Meiklejohn Stadium in 2022 and have not dropped a matchup since 1979 in Staten Island.

The last time these two teams met on March 20, 2022, Quaker pitching set a season high with 17 strikeouts including eight for Joe Miller and five for Danny Heintz.

At The Plate
Pokrovsky has been on a tear for the Quakers in the last few weeks, back up to a team-leading .350 batting average. He leads the team in hits (49) and doubles (21), and has struck out just 18 times, the fewest among Penn starters.

He's ranked fourth among Ivy hitters in average and leads the Ancient Eight in doubles, also pacing the nation in doubles per game (0.60).

Other .300+ hitters include Gavin Collins (.336), Nick Spaventa (.304), and Ernie Echevarria (.303). Davis Baker is hovering around .300 with a .297 mark, also pacing the Quakers with seven home runs and 33 RBIs.

Collins has a team-best .397 average in Ivy play this year, ranked third in the conference. His slugging percentage of .587 is good for fourth.

On The Mound
Overall, Penn is ranked second in the Ivy League in ERA with a 6.18 mark, just behind Yale (3.79). The Quakers do lead the conference in strikeouts (339).

It'll be interesting to see who gets the start for Penn on Wednesday against Wagner after typical midweek starter Aidan von Zuben (1-0, 9.35 ERA) threw two innings against Columbia on Sunday.

As of late, Penn's best option out of the bullpen has been Marty Coyne (3-1, 4.58), striking out 37 batters with just 14 walks in 35.1 innings of work. Jake Moss (1-0, 3.14), Connor Darling (0-1, 6.05), and Thomas Shurtleff (2-3, 2.92) have all been efficient in relief during the entirety of the 2025 season.

Scouting The Seahawks
Wagner enters this game currently in third place in the NEC standings at 16-5 behind LIU (18-3) and Central Connecticut State (19-2).

The Seahawks came into the past weekend with a 15-3 conference record before dropping two out of three games to Mercyhurst in Erie.

Offensively, Wagner is led by Bryce Phelps at the plate, slashing .415/497/.503 with 61 hits, 10 doubles, and a homer. Nicholas Mazzotta (.335) and Diego Tavarez (.323) are both batting north of .300 through 40 games. Joseph Mennella leads the team with eight home runs and 30 RBIs.

Jake Toporek (5-0, 3.98 ERA) has been lights out on the mound in 63.1 innings, striking out 53 batters with 16 walks. Jason Masick (2-3, 4.26) has a team-high four saves for Wagner pitching.

Nationally, Phelps is ranked 21st in D1 in hits per game (1.61), while Tavarez is the 28th toughest to strikeout in the country at 12.8.
