Softball Completes Day 2 of the Purple Classic

PHILADELPHIA— The University of Pennsylvania softball team fell short in their games against University of Nevada – Las Vegas and Utah State in the Purple Classic at Grand Canyon University earlier today. With the losses, the Quakers fell to 1-9 on the season.

Final: UNLV 6, Penn 1
Penn and UNLV were locked at zeroes until the third inning, when Jesse Farrell sent a sacrifice fly to center field, scoring Sofia Morales. Karmyna Becerra also scored on the play due to a throwing error, putting the Rebels up 2-0 at the end of the third.

In the fourth inning, UNLV picked up where they left off, Ariana Martinez sending a single into right field to score Kailani Olivas and advance Maddie Scott to second. Morales then sent a ball into center field, reaching and advancing on a fielding error while scoring Scott. Becerra stepped into the box and sent a single of her own to center field, scoring Morales. By the end of the fourth, the Rebels had increased their lead to 6-0.

In the fifth, Jesse Farrell sent the ball over the center field fence for a solo shot to score the sixth run of the evening for UNLV.

Penn started to rally in the sixth, Rachel Riley sending a single up the middle to score Gigi Ganje and move Madison Bauerle over to third. Unfortunately for the Quakers, that would be their only run of the game as UNLV locked in and sealed the game.

Final: Utah State 8, Penn 0
Similar to the first game, Penn and Utah State each made it through the lineup once before the scoring began. In the bottom of the third, Grace Matej sent a double into left center, clearing the bases to put three runs on the board for the Aggies. Utah State loaded the bases again, and Kaylee Erickson made the Quakers pay with a grand slam to right field. At the end of the third, the Aggies led, 7-0.

In the fourth inning, Utah State picked up where they left off offensively, Olivia Marble successfully laying down a sacrifice bunt down the first base line to score Ariel Fifita. Giselle Gonzalez then grounded a single into right center to score Brooklyn Pritchett, bringing in the eighth run of the game for the Aggies.
