Solid Start
For the second straight season, Penn is 3-0 to begin Ivy League play after sweeping Harvard in three consecutive games over the weekend at Tommy Lasorda Field at Meiklejohn Stadium.
Despite playing against a Harvard team with the longest losing streak in the nation, the Quakers battled back from deficits in two of the three games before coming out on top.
Penn was tied for the nation's longest win streak at seven games in a row before falling to Saint Joseph's, 14-10, on Tuesday at home in the quarterfinals of the Liberty Bell Classic.
The Quakers are looking for their first 6-0 start to Ivy play since 2014 when they started the conference slate 8-0.
The Dartmouth Series
Penn will be looking to extend upon its 94-90-2 series lead against Dartmouth in a matchup that dates back to 1891.
The Quakers took two out of three games from the Big Green at Tommy Lasorda Field last season, outscoring them 40-9 in the final two games. The last game was shortened with Penn coming out on top, 24-5 in eight innings.
Penn has won eight of its last 10 meetings against Dartmouth including seven straight in Hanover since 2016.
At The Plate
There have been three key members of Penn's starting lineup making an impact early this season as
Ryan Taylor (.319),
Gavin Collins (.311) and
Jarrett Pokrovsky (.311) are all hitting north of .300 through the first 18 games of the year.
Qwynn Ahearn (.286) and
Nick Spaventa (.271) are both in range, while freshmen
Michael Powell (.296) and
Ernie Echevarria (.316) have come on strong as of late.
Davis Baker leads the team in home runs (4) and RBIs (16), but is hitting .263 at the plate. He had three doubles against the Hawks on Tuesday to put him just one shy of Pokrovsky (9) on the leaderboard.
Speaking of Pokrovsky, he's currently ranked first in the Ivy League and 84th in the nation with his nine two-baggers, while within the top 20 (19th) in doubles per game (0.50).
How about three-baggers? Taylor has that one covered. He has an Ancient Eight-best three triples so far, good for 19th in the country.
On The Mound
The Quakers' permanent starting rotation is starting to become more clear as right-hander
Noah Millikan (0-1, 7.29 ERA) and right-hander
Sebastian Haggard (2-0, 2.86) have developed into the 1-2 punch the team has been looking for heading into the second Ivy weekend of the year.
With 29 and 24 strikeouts to lead the team, respectively, Haggard and Millikan have both had dominant outings to set the tone for the rest of the series.
In his first career Ivy start last Saturday against Harvard, Haggard struck out eight batters—walking none—while allowing just two runs on four hits to pick up his second win of the campaign. Millikan gave up just two runs on five hits with six Ks over five innings vs. the Crimson.
Senior captain
Will Tobin (0-1, 8.80) has been shaky despite maintaining a vise grip on the Sunday starter role, but
Josh Katz (2-2, 11.15) has picked up the slack after recording both a win and a save last weekend.
The back-end of the Penn bullpen has been protected by the lethal combination of relievers
Thomas Shurtleff (0-2, 1.04),
John Cerwinski (1-1, 2.53) and
Tommy Delany (1-1, 9.35) with several others working themselves into the fold.
Scouting The Big Green
At 0-13, Dartmouth enters the upcoming weekend with the longest losing streak in the nation as the Big Green enter their first home weekend searching for their first win of the season. Harvard beat Holy Cross on Tuesday, 14-13, to see its 16-game losing streak snapped.
Dartmouth dropped all three Ivy-opening games at Princeton over the weekend, nearly winning the second game before falling 7-6 in 14 innings on Saturday.
Ethan Browne (.340), Zackarie Casebonne (.323) and Taer Rodriguez (.295) are among the Big Green's leading hitters to begin the year. Dartmouth has hit just two home runs—the fewest by three in NCAA Division I baseball—as a team through the first 13 games, one each for Brown and Chris Miller. Jackson Hower leads the way with six RBIs.
On the mound, Nate Isler (0-2, 6.20 ERA) and Eddie Albert (0-2, 8.20) have both made a team-high four starts, while Bryce Loeger (0-5, 8.36) has made three starts as a part of the rotation. Albert has a Dartmouth-leading 16 strikeouts, with 15 for Isler.
