The Quakers are currently riding a six-match winning streak with a 14-3 record on the dual match season. It is the best start to a season for Penn since its Ivy League-winning campaign in 2005-06.
Penn's first match against the Monarchs was an absolute dogfight that was closer than the 4-1 score indicated. All three matches in doubles were played out and four of the six singles matches went to a third set.
ODU's only win of the afternoon came in doubles after securing the final two matches. No. 79 Cosme Rolland De Ravel / Adam Majchrzak won their match to make it 1-1 with the deciding match being at No. 1.
Sanjeev Chundu /
Aaron Sandler were down 6-5 with a chance to force the tiebreak. A controversial call following Penn's serve resulted in the Monarchs being awarded the game and subsequently the match.
The Quakers overcame this setback and won their first four matches in singles.
Manfredi Graziani started it off by defeating his second ranked opponent of the season – No. 91 Connor Henry van Schalkwyk – in two sets. Sandler also won in straight sets at No. 5.
The remaining four matches went to a third set with the Red and Blue needing to take two.
Shaurya Bharadwaj took care of business at No. 4. After losing his first set in close fashion,
Justin Chung would secure the win for Penn at No. 6.
Penn made swift work of the Broncs in the second leg of the doubleheader, winning 4-0 in about 90 minutes.
The Red and Blue won the first two doubles matches to secure the point. Chundu / Sandler (No. 1) and Graziani /
Shaurya Bharadwaj (No. 3) won by a combined score of 12-1.
In singles,
Luka Butera and
Stephan Gershfeld both competed after not playing in the ODU match. Gershfeld got on the board first at No. 5, winning 6-1 in both sets. Butera followed with a 6-0, 6-2 win at No. 6
Graziani sealed the match for Penn to improve his individual record to 11-3 on the spring season, all out the No. 1 spot.
