Football’s O’Brien Named Finalist for Doris Robinson FCS Scholar-Athlete Award

PHILADELPHIA – Stats Perform announced Tuesday morning the finalists for the Doris Robinson Scholar-Athlete Award, recognizing one student-athlete from each Division I conference. The University of Pennsylvania football team's Liam O'Brien was selected to represent the Ivy League as one of this year's finalists.

The Doris Robinson Award, first presented in 2015 and in its 11th season, honors FCS student-athletes who exemplify excellence on the field, in the classroom and across the community. The values embody the leadership and integrity championed by Doris Robinson, a former schoolteacher and the wife of legendary Grambling State University coach Eddie Robinson.

In the classroom, O'Brien is a Finance and Business Analytics double major in Penn's prestigious Wharton School of Business. He spent the previous summer as an Investment Banking Analyst at J.P. Morgan, receiving a full-time job offer from the company upon completion. In addition, he's a member of Penn's Student-Athlete Advisory Council (SAAC), the Penn Athletics Wharton Leadership Academy (PAWLA) and the Ivy League Football Council, the leadership group that brought the FCS Playoffs to the conference. O'Brien was also a semifinalist for the National Football Foundation's (NFF) William V. Campbell Trophy.

In the community, O'Brien has participated in Uplifting Athletes, a non-profit organization that invests in the lives of those affected by rare diseases. He's also been involved with Penn Football's annual Get in the Game Bone Marrow Drive with NMDP.

O'Brien has enjoyed himself a strong year as Penn's starting quarterback, passing for 2,133 yards and 17 touchdowns while completing 76 percent (189-for-283) of his pass attempts. He has also rushed for 517 yards with seven more TDs.

Notably, O'Brien leads the Ivy League and is ranked sixth nationally in total offense (passing and rushing) per game average (294.4). Entering the final weekend of the season, he is also ranked second in the Ivy League in completion percentage, completions per game (21.0), and passing touchdowns (17), third in passing yards and passing yards per game (237.0). He's fifth in total rushing yards (517) and sixth in rushing yards per carry (4.20), sixth in rushing yards per game (57.4).

O'Brien also holds the single-game program records for total touchdowns (7) and passing touchdowns (6).

The Doris Robinson Scholar-Athlete Award recipient will be announced on Dec. 9, then honored at the Stats Perform FCS National Awards Show on Jan. 3 in Nashville, Tennessee. Also to be presented are the Walter Payton Award (FCS Offensive Player of the Year), Buck Buchanan Award (FCS Defensive Player of the Year), Jerry Rice Award (FCS Freshman Player of the Year), Eddie Robinson Award (FCS Coach of the Year) and HBCU National Player of the Year Award.
