O’Brien (Offense), Stokes (Special Teams) Take Home Week 3 Ivy Honors

Stokes becomes first player in program history to start season with three straight weekly honors

PHILADELPHIA – For the second time this season, a pair of University of Pennsylvania football players earned Ivy League weekly awards as senior quarterback Liam O'Brien was named Ivy Offensive Player of the Week and Julien Stokes earned Special Teams Player of the Week, announced by the conference office on Monday afternoon.

For Stokes, he becomes just the second player in program history (Malachi Hosley in 2023) to win an Ivy weekly honor in three consecutive weeks and the first player to do it in three weeks to begin a season. Jake Heimlicher was named Defensive Player of the Week following the first two games of the 2022 campaign. At three weekly honors, Stokes is now tied for the second-most in a single season.

O'Brien was excellent under center as Penn took down two-time defending champion Dartmouth Saturday at Franklin Field, accounting for all four of the Quakers' touchdowns with two through the air and two on the ground. He completed 76 percent (16-for-21) of his pass attempts for 147 yards and two TDs, while adding 99 rushing yards—falling one yard short of becoming Penn's first 100-yard rushing game by a QB since 2010—and another two scores. This is O'Brien's second career Ivy Offensive Player of the Week award.

Stokes continues to dominant and showcase why he's in the conversation as the best return specialist in the nation, FCS or FBS. He ran back a 65-yard punt return midway through the fourth quarter that gave Penn a short field, allowing it to put the game out of reach. Stokes also had three kick returns for 76 yards, which included a 34-yarder that also led to points. He finished with 141 total return yards and has 100+ total return yards in three consecutive games.

Stokes is the nation's leader (FCS and FBS) in all-purpose yards per game (195.0) by a very healthy margin and has nine kick returns for 269 yards and five punt returns for 147 yards and a TD, totaling 416 total yards. Entering Week 4 with 1,115 career kick return yards, he's now 34 yards from passing Mark Fabish '96 (1,148) for second all-time and 122 from the record, currently held by Chris Wynn '09 (1,236).

For their individual performances, LB John Lista and DB Ezra Fearon were tabbed to the Ivy League's weekly honor roll.

With a 2-1 overall record, Penn will play its final non-conference tune-up on Friday evening in the first-ever meeting with Marist at Franklin Field. The Community Night/Cancer Awareness Game presented by Penn Medicine will kick off at 7 p.m. and will be streamed live on ESPN+.
