PHILADELPHIA – The University of Pennsylvania's James P. Tuppeny/Betty J. Costanza Director of Track & Field/Cross Country,
Steve Dolan, has announced the promotion of
Matt Gosselin to the position of Head Women's Cross Country Coach/Assistant Track & Field Coach.
Gosselin has been at Penn since August 2019 when he was hired as the program's assistant coach for cross country and track & field. In 2021, he was promoted to the position of Associate Head Women's Cross Country Coach/Assistant Track & Field Coach. This is actually Gosselin's second stint at Penn, as he originally spent two years as a volunteer assistant with the Quakers from 2013-15.
In his position on the staff, Gosselin oversees the women's cross country program in the fall and the distance and middle-distance groups in the winter and spring.
"Matt has done an outstanding job with the women's middle distance and distance runners in both cross country and on the track," said Dolan. "He has guided multiple student-athletes to the NCAA Championships, Ivy League titles and school record performances. I look forward to all that is to come as Coach Gosselin steps into the role of Head Women's Cross Country Coach here at Penn."
The Penn women have won four Ivy Heptagonal team titles during Gosselin's current tenure, taking indoor titles in 2020 and 2024 and outdoor victories in 2022 and 2024. In addition,
Olivia Morganti made history at the 2024 Penn Relays when she took first place in the steeplechase title, the first time a Penn woman won an individual event at the Relays. The cross country team, meanwhile, had three women earn All-Ivy in both 2022 and 2023, tied the program's best finish at NCAA Regionals each of the last two years (third) with a combined seven runners earning All-Region, and has had an individual compete at the NCAA Championships each of the last two seasons (
Maeve Stiles in 2022, Morganti in 2023).
Gosselin's athletes hold seven program records, six of them have totaled ten Ivy Heps individual titles and teamed up for two relays wins, and four have raced to six NCAA Championship qualifications.
Gosselin ran at Gonzaga University, where he racked up 12 varsity letters as a Bulldog in cross country and indoor and outdoor track & field and, when he graduated, resided inside the top 10 in the indoor and outdoor 800m and outdoor 1,500m in program history.
Upon graduation, Gosselin spent time as a volunteer assistant at his alma mater and Saint Martin's before joining the Quakers for two seasons. For the 2015-16 season, Gosselin landed at Binghamton, where he spent a season as an assistant, helping the Bearcats' cross country teams to a pair of third-place finishes in the America East. In his lone year there, athletes in his discipline captured a pair of conference titles and three runner-up finishes.
Following his stint at Binghamton, Gosselin returned to Philadelphia to serve as the assistant coach at La Salle, beginning in 2016-17 the season. In his time with the Explorers, athletes in his disciplines accounted for nine Atlantic 10 individual champions.
Gosselin graduated from Gonzaga in 2012 with a bachelor's degree in human physiology.
