WORCESTER, Mass. – The University of Pennsylvania men's lightweight crew had a superb day at the EARC Sprints, winning gold in the Second Varsity Eight and taking silver medals in the Varsity Eight and Third Varsity Eight. As a result, the Quakers won the Jope Cup for overall points for just the second time in program history—the other coming in 1967—scoring 36.00 points to best second-place Harvard (34.00) and third-place Cornell (29.00).
The one-day championship event was held on Lake Quinsigamond.

Penn met its seed in the final race of the day, keeping within Harvard's boat but falling by a little less than three seconds. The Quakers beat third-place Princeton by a little more than two seconds.

Cornell was the winner of this seven-boat race by a little more than four seconds, and Penn nipped Yale by just over six-tenths of a second and Harvard by 1.1 seconds in what was a fantastic finish for second place.
