Off to New Haven: Baseball Continues Ivy Schedule With Three Games at Yale

PHILADELPHIA – The University of Pennsylvania baseball team continues its Ivy League slate this weekend, heading to The Constitution State to begin a three-game series with Yale at George H.W. Bush '48 Field in New Haven.

Saturday's doubleheader begins at 11:30 a.m. with Sunday starting at noon.

The Quakers are playing their first game in six days after having a cancellation during the week at Saint Joseph's, while the Bulldogs are coming off a series victory at Princeton.

An Unexpected Break
Penn comes into the weekend utilizing some much-needed rest, playing its first game in six days after its midweek tilt at Saint Joseph's was postponed, then canceled due to inclement weather.

It's the team's longest layoff of the season and comes at a good time too, as the Quakers get set for a busy second half of the campaign.

Tough Outing
Columbia swept the three-game series against Penn over the weekend in New York. The Quakers fell in both games Saturday, 14-6 and 11-1, before a 9-7 defeat in the finale on Sunday.

Penn scored two runs in the eighth inning but couldn't complete the comeback in the loss.

Henseler Milestone Watch
Wyatt Henseler continues his march towards history in multiple stat categories, now just three from tying, four from becoming the Ivy League's all-time leader in RBIs. He currently has 161 and needs 165 to become the new record holder.

Henseler is also 10 hits from 200 at 190 and needs 15 (205) to become Penn's career leader in base hits.

At The Plate
Most of Penn's starting lineup is hitting over, at, or near the .300 mark at the plate this season. Davis Baker leads the team with a .347 batting average, also pacing the Ivy League in hits (35). Nick Spaventa (.343), Henseler (.316) and Ryan Taylor (.313) follow closely behind.

Connor Chavez and Taylor added their names to the homer list for the Quakers over the weekend, while Henseler hit two bombs in the three-game series to increase his conference-leading total to 12 with 28 RBIs.

On The Mound
Penn's traditional mid-week starter has been freshman southpaw Marty Coyne (0-0, 8.47 ERA), but he made a two-inning appearance on Sunday at Columbia. In his last two starts, Coyne has struck out eight batters and allowed four runs over 5.1 innings of work.

Carson Ozmer (1-0, 2.25) and Eli Trop (2-1, 3.75) have been a formidable 1-2 punch in the back-end of the bullpen for the entirety of this season so far, combining for 17 total appearances and 32 innings.

Ozmer has struck out 26, walked just nine with five earned runs given up, while Trop has settled in as of late, spinning 9.2 consecutive innings without allowing an earned run and totaling 16 strikeouts during that span.

Scouting Yale
*The Bulldogs have won three of their last four games including two-of-three at Princeton over the weekend. They had previously dropped two games in an Ivy-opening series vs. Dartmouth despite winning the opener, 6-2, on March 22.

*Yale out-scored Princeton, 27-4, over the final two games of last weekend's series including a 22-2 victory in Saturday's nightcap.

He's also thrown excess of 100 or more pitches in four consecutive starts, headlined by a nine-inning complete game against the Big Green on March 22.

Series History
*This weekend marks the 221st, 222nd, and 223rd matchups all-time between Ivy foes Penn and Yale. The Bulldogs lead the series, 118-99-3.

*The Quakers took two-of-three games from the Elis in 2023 at Tommy Lasorda Field including a 1-0 shutout victory and then an 11-1 win in the finale.

*The series is tied, 5-5, over the last 10 matchups dating back to 2018.

*Penn's last trip to New Haven in 2022 was a series victory, beginning with a 27-4 win at Bush Field.
