PHILADELPHIA – The University of Pennsylvania lightweight men's crew gets into its cup season on Saturday, traveling to Cornell for the Matthews Trophy and the Leonard Cup. As usual, Harvard will join the Quakers and Big Red and row as guests.
The Penn and Cornell Varsity Eights will row for the Matthews Trophy, while the Leonard Cup is presented to the team that accumulates the most points across the day's Eights races. Penn swept both pieces of hardware last year on the Schuylkill, winning the Matthews Trophy for the first time since 1990.
The Varsity Eight should showcase some great racing. In the first IRCA/IRA poll, released on March 22, Harvard's Varsity Eight was ranked first and Cornell second while Penn was ranked fourth.
