Men's Basketball Announces 2023-24 Team Award Recipients

PHILADELPHIA – The University of Pennsylvania men's basketball team announced its yearly award winners at the team's annual banquet, which took place on Wednesday, April 11.

Senior guard Clark Slajchert was named recipient of the Arthur Kiefaber Most Valuable Player Award. A second-team All-Ivy selection, Slajchert finished second among Ivy League players and tops on the team in scoring average (18.0 ppg) and was also second in three-point field goals per game (2.6) and sixth in 3FG percentage (.422). Despite missing essentially eight games this season—he was injured early in Penn's game at Houston on December 30 and missed the next seven after that, six in Ivy play—Slajchert was second on the team in assists (63), second with 37 treys, and tied for second with 26 steals. The senior guard reached the 1,000-point mark for his three-year career in Penn's second-to-last game, against Columbia, and finished his Quakers career with 1,030 points which is 42nd on the program's all-time scoring list. He reached the 1,000-point mark in his 73rd collegiate game, tied for 18th fastest in program history with Mike Jordan and Ugonna Onyewke. Earlier on Wednesday, Slajchert—who has exhausted his Ivy League eligibility—announced that he will use his final year of eligibility as a graduate student at USC.

Junior forward Ed Holland III was honored with Bus McDonald Award winner as the program's Most Inspirational Player this season. Holland played in 22 games this season and made eight starts, averaging 5.8 points and 2.9 rebounds to go with 13 assists, six steals and five blocked shots. The junior scored in double figures four times and led the Quakers in scoring twice, with 16 against John Jay (going 7-of-7 from the field) and with 18 at Brown.

Freshman guard Sam Brown was named recipient of the G. Fred DiBona Award as the team's top newcomers. After missing the first four games of the season due to injury, Brown played in all 25 games and made 18 starts. He averaged 10.9 points per game and 2.9 rebounds, dished out 48 assists, and led the Quakers with 61 three-point baskets. Brown was third among Ivy League players in 3FG percentage (43.3), fourth in 3FG made per game (2.4), and 18th in scoring. The freshman hit double figures in the scoring column 16 times, including three games with at least 20 points, and his 26-point game on February 23 at Dartmouth marked the most points by a Penn freshman since Ryan Betley had a 28-point game in 2017.

Penn also gave out the "Billy Basic Award" for the fourth time on Wednesday night, and for the second straight season it was given to senior Andrew Laczkowski. "Latch" played in 28 games during the season, making 10 starts. He averaged 4.5 points and 3.0 rebounds per game, with 48 of his 84 boards coming on the offensive glass. The senior also had 12 assists, 18 steals and four blocked shots.
