BOSTON – The University of Pennsylvania track teams had a successful Friday at the NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships. The three-day event concludes tomorrow at The Track at New Balance.

Penn's day began with the men's pole vault, where junior
James Rhoads finished fourth and senior
Scott Toney placed fifth in a 16-man field. Both topped out at 5.50 meters (18 feet 0.5 inches) and finished behind Kentucky's Keaton Daniel—the champion at 5.70 meters—Arkansas State's Brad Jelmert (5.65m), and Virginia Tech's Conner McClure (5.55m).
Isabella Whittaker was not quite as fortunate in the women's 400, as her season came to an end in Friday night's heats. Running in the first heat, the Quaker senior was victorious in a race that featured a few dicey moments among the four runners. Her winning time was 52.93 seconds, a mere .04 ahead of second-place Kaylyn Brown (Arkansas) and .05 ahead of third-place Joanne Reid (Arkansas).
However, enough runners from the other three heats beat Whittaker's time to knock her from tomorrow's final. The senior's time ended up being 11th in the field of 16.
