Men’s Tennis Wins Thriller Against Old Dominion, 4-3, on Saturday

Norfolk, Va. – In a nearly four-hour bout, the University of Pennsylvania men's tennis team took down Old Dominion, 4-3, on Saturday afternoon. The Quakers sit at 3-3 throughout the dual match portion of the season.

Manfredi Graziani was the hero for Penn, securing a win in doubles over a top-10 ranked opponent with partner Zachery Lim, and clinched the match with a 7-6 win in the third set.

Despite dropping the initial doubles match, Penn picked up the doubles point with excellent play at No. 1 and No. 2. 56th-ranked Kian Vakili and Aaron Sandler took down 33rd-ranked Cosme Rolland de Ravel and Jakob Cadonau, and Graziani and Lim defeated 6th-ranked Codie van Schalkwyk and Connor van Schalkwyk to solidify the doubles point.

In singles action, Baylor Sai dropped his match at No. 4 in straight sets to allow the Monarchs to tie the match 1-1. Matthew Rutter then defeated Jakob Cadonau at No. 6, 6-3, 7-5 to give the Quakers the lead, 2-1.
 
Vakili dropped his match that went the full three sets at No. 2, and Luka Butera fell to Aryan Saleh in straight sets at No. 5, allowing Old Dominion to claim back the lead 3-2.
 
Penn got a huge victory from Sandler at No.3, winning in straight sets and securing two tiebreak points.
 
With Sandler's match concluded, and the score tied 3-3, Graziani was battling with Codie van Schalkwyk at No.1 in the third set. Graziani picked up a win in the first set, dropped set two and won three via a tiebreak to solidify the win.
 
Throughout the day the Quakers won five-out-of-six tiebreakers, clinching their second road win of the year.

Penn will prepare for a busy weekend at the Hamlin/Hecht Tennis Centers. The Quakers will welcome Navy for a doubleheader at 11:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. on Friday. On Sunday, Penn will host Delaware at 12:00 p.m. and Saint Joseph's 4:00 p.m.
