PHILADELPHIA- The 42nd-ranked University of Pennsylvania men's tennis team dominated its doubleheader Saturday afternoon against Penn State and Hofstra.
The Quakers downed the Nittany Lions 4-0 and defeated the Pride 4-0 at the Hecht Tennis Center. Penn is now 10-5 and is 7-2 at home.
In the opening match against Penn State, Penn took the doubles point to take the lead, 1-0. The Quakers got a 6-4 win at No.1.
Parashar Bharadwaj and
Manfredi Graziani and a 7-5 win at No. 3 from first time partners,
Aaron Sandler and
Tal Goodman.
In singles play, Graziani picked up a straight set 6-1, 6-2 domination at No. 1, to make the match 2-0. Goodman did not allow his opponent Ritkvik Nadikude to earn a point, as he earned a 6-0, 6-0 victory at No. 6.
To wrap up the match, at No. 4, Rutter defeated Ari Cotulas in straight sets.
As for matches that were unfinished, Sandler was starting the first game of the second set at No. 2,
Baylor Sai was in the third game of the second set at No. 3 and Bharadwaj was in the second game of his second set at No. 5.
During the 4:00 p.m. battle with Hofstra, The Red and Blue picked up the doubles point to establish the early lead. At No. 2 Bharadwaj and Graziani battled for a 6-3 win, while Sandler and Goodman cruised to a 6-1 victory at No. 3.
In singles action, Rutter secured the first singles win with a 6-2, 6-2 straight set victory at No. 3. Goodman followed up with a 6-4, 6-1 win at No. 5, to give the Quakers the 3-0 lead.
Bharadwaj sealed the deal with a straight set win at No. 4, 6-3, 6-2.
Among matches that did not finish, after dropping the first set, Graziani won set two but was paused prior to the start of the third set at No. 1. Sandler was in the sixth game of the second set at No. 2, and
Luka Butera was in the fourth game of the second set at No. 6.
Throughout the day, Bharadwaj and Graziani and Sandler and Goodman went 2-0 as doubles pairings. In Singles play, Rutter and Goodman went 2-0.
Up Next
Penn will visit Florida next week with matchups against UCF and Miami. The Quakers will take on the Knights on Monday, March 4, at 10:00 a.m. and the Hurricanes on Thursday, March 7, at 2:00 p.m. for two midweek battles.
