PHILADELPHIA – The Ivy League has announced its weekly awards in men's basketball, and for the third time in the last four weeks a University of Pennsylvania freshman has been named Ivy League Rookie of the Week. This time it's freshman guard
Tyler Perkins, who earns the honor for the first time this season.
Perkins scored all 19 of his points in the first half as Penn rolled to a big halftime lead and cruised to an 80-51 win over Dartmouth in the Ivy League opener for both teams Saturday at The Palestra. Perkins hit a career-high five three-pointers in the rout, knocking them down in a row over a seven-minute span in the opening period. He also had five rebounds and three assists (without a turnover) in the victory. Earlier in the week, the freshman guard had 13 points, a team-high eight rebounds, two assists and a steal in Penn's 88-68 loss at #25 Auburn.
The award is long overdue for Perkins, who is second among Penn players and seventh among Ivy Leaguers in both scoring (14.8 ppg) and rebounding (5.8 rpg) this season. He also leads the Quakers and is third among Ivy players with 25 steals, and third on the team in assists (35) and three-point baskets (32).
Penn (9-7, 1-0 Ivy League) is off until next Monday, when the Quakers make their first Ivy League road trip of the season to face Cornell in an MLK Day matinee. Tipoff with the Big Red is scheduled for 2 p.m. at Newman Arena.
