PHILADELPHIA – The Ivy League has announced its weekly awards in men's basketball, and University of Pennsylvania sophomore guard
AJ Levine was named the Ivy League Player of the Week. He becomes the fifth different Penn player to earn a weekly honor from the Ivy League or Philadelphia Big 5 this season.
Levine earns the honor after scoring 19 points in Penn's 80-61 win over NJIT last Wednesday. That total was six points above his previous career high, and 14 of them came in the second half with eight of them coming in a row as part of a 17-0 Penn run that broke a 35-35 tie and allowed the Quakers to cruise to the victory. The sophomore shot 7-9 from the field including 4-6 from distance, the four treys a career best. Levine also had seven steals against the Highlanders, the most by a Penn player since the Ivy League's all-time leader in steals, Ibrahim Jaaber, had seven against Navy on December 7, 2006. Finally, Levine matched his season high with five rebounds and dished out four assists.
Penn (7-6) opens Ivy League play later tonight at archrival Princeton; the Quakers and Tigers will tip off at 7 p.m. from Jadwin Gym and you can watch the game nationally on ESPN+, in the Philadelphia viewing area on NBC Sports Philadelphia, and in the New York City metro area on SNY. The Red and Blue are back at home on Saturday, hosting Brown at 2 p.m.
