Running at the John Thomas Terrier Classic on Saturday, senior
Isabella Whittaker continued what is increasingly looking like one of the most special seasons in program history. She ran the 400 and clocked 51.96 seconds—a full second off the program and Ivy League records she set just two weeks ago.
In addition to setting the school, Ivy and facility records with her time, Whittaker moved herself into second place in the world in the distance with Saturday's run.
Whittaker also was part of another record-setting performance at the Terrier Classic on Saturday, joining
Christiana Nwachuku,
Jocelyn Niemiec and
Aliya Garozzo in clocking 3:32.44. That time shaved nearly three seconds off the previous mark, set in 2020, and also broke the facility and Ivy League records. Penn won the event, easily outdistancing second-place Stanford (3:37.99) by more than five seconds.
Those performances capped a weekend that also saw the men's pole vault record broken Thursday night at Penn State, where
Scott Toney broke the 18-foot mark and cleared a height of 5.50 meters (18 feet 0.5 inches).
James Rhoads was not far below him, clearing 5.40 meters (17 feet 8.5 inches).
Also at Penn State this weekend, sophomore
Kampton Kam, sophomore
Mark Hellwig and junior
Conrad Moore took first, second and fourth in the men's high jump. Kam's effort was particularly noteworthy—not only did he win the event, but his top height of 2.15 meters (7 feet 0.5 inches) set the national record in his home country of Singapore. Hellwig and Moore—who was competing in his hometown, having grown up in State College—were two of four jumpers who cleared 2.03 meters (6 feet 8 inches) and earned their place based on misses.
In addition to the Terrier Classic and the Penn State National Open, it was men's day at the River Hawk Invitational hosted by UMass Lowell.
Penn's best finishes occurred in the 60-meter hurdles, where
Shane Gardner clocked 8.01 seconds in both his heat and in the final which placed him third, and in the 500 where
Alec Jackson (1:03.37) was third among 46 runners.
