Men's Tennis Heads to Charlottesville for ITA Kickoff Weekend

PHILADELPHIA- After starting the dual match portion of the season 1-1, the University of Pennsylvania men's tennis team will head to Charlottesville, Virginia for a four-team ITA Kickoff Weekend event on Saturday and Sunday.

Penn will face Florida Atlantic Saturday, then either #3 Virginia or Northern Arizona Sunday.

Previewing Penn                                                         
The Quakers downed Furman 4-0, in their most recent match in Knoxville, to pick up their first victory of the spring season. The Kian Vakili/Aaron Sandler and Manfredi Graziani/Zachery Lim pairings grabbed victories to secure the doubles point and a 1-0 lead for Penn. Sandler and Parashar Bhardwaj picked up straight-set singles win to extend the lead to 3-0. Matthew Rutter then clinched the match with another straight-set win.

Penn will be back in action for the first time since January 14, after last week's doubleheader against Navy was postponed due to weather.

The doubles duo of Vakili and Sandler have landed at No. 56 according to the latest ITA doubles rankings.

Previewing Florida Atlantic
The Owls are 4-0 in 2024, including a 5-2 win over William and Mary on January 25. Florida Atlantic will be on the road for just the second time this season, after opening up its first three matches in Boca Raton.

The Owls have three players that will enter the week with undefeated records in 2024, led by Alberto Colas riding a seven-game winning streak. Juan Martin Jalif and John Bernard hold 3-0 marks. As a team, the Owls are 15-3 in singles play and 6-0 in doubles.

Previewing Virginia
The Cavaliers are 3-1 in 2024, and the two-time defending National Champions are 2-1 at home. Virginia's lone loss of the season came last weekend against fifth-ranked South Carolina 4-3.

The Cavaliers have three singles players ranked in ITA's top 125, including Chris Rodesch at No. 22, Jeffery Von Der Schulenburg at No. 26 and Inaki Montes De La Torre at No 38. As for doubles, James Hopper and Montes De La Torre are ranked No. 8 and Alexander Kiefer and Von Der Schulenburg are ranked No. 44.

Previewing Northern Arizona
The Lumberjacks are 3-1 in 2024, carrying a two-match win streak. Northern Arizona is coming off a pair of 7-0 victories over Western New Mexico last Thursday. In the 18 matches played, the Lumberjacks did not drop a single match.

In singles, Semen Agynskyy, Piotr Galus, Jakub Prachar and Lance Urlaub are all 2-0. While the doubles team of Dani Torres and Maciej Ziomber are 3-0, and Maikel De Boes and Galus are 2-0.
