PHILADELPHIA – Recognized for his contributions in the classroom in addition to his impressive success on the field this season, Penn football senior defensive lineman
Joey Slackman was tabbed a second-team Academic All-America by College Sports Communicators (CSC).
Â
Slackman is Penn's sixth football student-athlete to earn Academic All-America honors and the first since Mike Germino in 1999.
Â
A political science major, Slackman is the only Ivy Leaguer recognized on the list this season. He concluded a highly decorated 2023 season back in November, being named a two-time All-America (by AFCA and Phil Steele) and the Ivy League Defensive Player of the Year, Penn's first recipient of the Bushnell Cup since 2015 and the 10th all-time.
Â
The Commack, N.Y. native totaled 12.0 tackles for loss, ranked first on the team and second among Ivy League defenders by season's end. Slackman also registered four sacks for a loss of 30 yards with 50 total tackles, ranking fourth on the team. He also finished the year with four QB hurries, a pass breakup and a blocked field goal.
