ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The University of Pennsylvania men's and women's track teams had a successful day at Navy on Saturday, competing in the Wesley A. Brown Invitational hosted by the Midshipmen and also including Cornell.
The Quakers had first-place finishes across five women's events and three men's events on the day, with two of the winners running PRs in the process and senior
Isabella Whittaker continuing to give indications that she might be having a season for the ages.
Fresh off a record-breaking performance last weekend in the 400, Whittaker put together another record-setting win on Saturday as she clocked a PR 1:10.12 in the 500. That set a Penn record, a Brown Fieldhouse mark, and gave her another Ivy League record as she eclipsed the 1:10.23 set by Harvard's Victoria Bossong in 2023. Whittaker led a 1-2-3 sweep by the Quakers as
Jocelyn Niemiec (1:12.13) and
Aliya Garozzo (1:12.31) also set PRs in taking second and third behind Whittaker. In the process, they moved into third and fourth on the program's top-10 list behind only Whittaker and Jesse Carlin (1:11.77 in 2005).
Also on the women's side,
Moforehan Abinusawa continued to sparkle in the 60-meter dash, clocking 7.44 seconds to beat teammate Christiana Nwachukwu (PR 7.54) by a tenth of a second as the Quakers took four of the top six spots. The roles were reversed in the 200, Nwachukwu clocking 24.00 seconds to better Abinusawa who was second in 24.19.
Morayo Kassim was fourth in 25.12. Nwachukwu propelled herself to second on Penn's all-time top-10 list, behind only Imani Solan (23.80 in 2017).
Penn's other individual win on the women's side came in the shot put, as sophomore
Angeludi Asaah earned the victory with a top throw of 13.99 meters (45 feet 10.75 inches). That moved her into fifth place on Penn's top-10 list. Classmate
Stella Inman joined her classmate in hitting a PR and finished third with a top distance of 13.69 meters (44 feet 11.00 inches).
The 4x400 women's relay team also was victorious on Saturday. Kassim, Nwachukwu,
Caia Gelli and Niemiec clocked 3:46.05 to win by nearly four seconds.
On the men's side,
Ryan Matulonis led a Quakers charge in the 500 as they took four of the top five spots. The freshman's time was 1:02.66, ahead of second-place
Alec Jackson (1:03.85), fourth-place
Devante Heywood (1:06.05), and fifth-place
Dimitri Nicholson (1:06.33).
Sophomore
Mark Hellwig took first place in the high jump on Saturday with a height of 2.09 meters (6 feet 10.25 inches).
Kampton Kam was third with a height of 2.06 meters (6 feet 9.00 inches).
Penn also took the top two spots in the men's pole vault, as juniors
James Rhoads and
Scott Toney cleared 5.25 meters (17 feet 2.75 inches). Rhoads was awarded first place with fewer misses.
Penn's 4x400 men's relay team was nipped by Navy, the Middies clocking 3:13.35 to the Quakers' 3:13.39.
On the women's side,
Sarah Lavery took second in the women's high jump, clearing a season-best 1.69 meters (5 feet 6.5 inches), while
Paris Ivery was second in the long jump with a PR distance of 5.62 meters (18 feet 5.25 inches). Freshman
Ella Neskora also had a second-place finish on Saturday, in the weight throw, with a best toss of 16.18 meters (53 feet 1 inch) that was a PR and a mere half-inch shy of the event winner, Navy's Jordynn Hutchinson.
