T&F Completes Penn-10 Select; Whittaker Breaks Records

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. – The University of Pennsylvania track and field programs opened the new year at the Ocean Breeze Complex on Staten Island Saturday afternoon for the Penn 10-Team Select, with the record books smacked nine times including a new facility and program record in the 400m by senior Isabella Whittaker.

The women saw five program top-10 movements as well as a facility and program record from Whittaker, while the men saw four shifts to even out the nine new Quakers in the books.

On the women's side, Whittaker highlighted Penn's performance, taking first place in the 400 in 52.96 seconds. That set the Ocean Breeze Complex and program records, tied the Ivy League's indoor record, and is the second-fastest time in the NCAA this year. Jocelyn Niemiec was closely behind Whittaker with a time of 54.95 to move up to sixth in program history.

Aliya Garozzo set the pace for the day, placing third in the 60m hurdles in 8.62 to shift into eighth in program history. Sarah Lavery kicked off the field events with another third-place finish in the high jump, soaring in at 1.71m (5' 7.25") to solidify tenth place in the record book.

The Red and Blue snatched up two other first-place finishes in the pole vault and weight throw to finish off the day. Freshman Evangeline Thomson came close to breaking her record in the pole vault with a height of 3.80m (12' 5.5"). Ella Nesorka claimed the women's last record of the meet in the weight throw, hurling a mighty 16:08 (52' 9") to move into sixth in program history.

On the men's side, the 60m hurdles started strong, with a top finish from freshman Sean Golembiewski (8.06) in his track and field debut, sweetening first place with a time that puts him at seventh in program history. Golembiewski was followed closely by sophomore Jake Rose, who landed third place in 8.17.

Ryan Matulonis kept the men's momentum going in the 400m, picking up first in 48.17 while moving into sixth in program history. The pole vault landed the last two program records of the day, with Scott Toney and James Rhoads snatching first and second with identical heights of 5.16m (16' 11.25") to share night place in the record book.

The Quakers ended the day with 12 victories to open the 2024 portion of their track and field campaign.
