Women's Soccer Local This Weekend; Home With Lafayette, at Saint Joseph's

PHILADELPHIA – Following a pair of wins on the Penn Park pitch to open the 2023 season, the University of Pennsylvania women's soccer team lost a pair of road games last weekend. The Quakers will play twice more this weekend, once at home and one on the road (though within city limits), as they move ever closer to the start of Ivy League play.

The Series With Lafayette
Despite their relative proximity to each other, Thursday's match will represent just the 11th meeting between the Quakers and the Leopards, the first since 2016, and just the second since 2006. Penn leads the series, 7-3-0, including a 2-1 win in Philadelphia the last time these teams met, during the 2016 season. Lafayette's most recent win came the last time these teams met in Easton, a 5-4 decision on October 26, 2005. Overall, Penn is 3-2-0 when playing on Lafayette's home field.

The Series With Saint Joseph's
The Quakers and the Hawks share a city, but they've met even more infrequently than Penn and Lafayette. In all, Penn and SJU have played eight times previously, the Quakers winning seven of them and the teams tying on the eighth. This is the first meeting since the 2013 season, a 1-0 Penn win that was played on Hawk Hill. In all, Sunday will be the Red and Blue's third trip to City Avenue, the other coming in 2009 when the teams played to a scoreless draw.

A Sort of Homecoming
Sunday's match marks a relative homecoming for Penn associate head coach Fred King, who came to University City prior to last season after 10 years working with the Saint Joseph's program. During his tenure on Hawk Hill, the Hawks won the 2016 Atlantic 10 regular-season title and played in eight A-10 Tournaments. He coached 21 all-league players and seven who earned all-region honors.

Quaker Notemeal
*Penn started the season 2-0-0 for the first time since 2018 and just the second time since 2015, defeating American and Delaware on Penn Park to start the 2023 campaign. However, the Quakers fell back to .500 with road losses at St. John's and Lehigh last weekend.

*Dr. Krissy Turner is in her second season coaching Penn after 24 years at Monmouth (1998-2021) and three at Thursday's opponent, Lafayette (1995-97). After earning two wins in the season's first weekend, she needs just one more victory to reach 300 as a collegiate head coach (currently 299-176-52 all-time).

*Senior goalkeeper Laurence Gladu kept a clean sheet for the first 214 minutes of the season—posting the eighth and ninth shutouts of her career—and so far this season the two-time honorable mention All-Ivy pick has 16 saves while allowing just two goals. She earned a spot on the Ivy League honor roll on Tuesday.

*Junior Isobel Glass made the Ivy League honor roll after Week 1, and with good reason. Her sublime, re-directed header provided the only goal in Penn's 1-0 win over Delaware on Sunday, and two days earlier she drew the penalty that led to senior Lauren Teuschl's converted penalty kick for the only goal in the Quakers' 1-0 win over American.

*In front of Gladu, fellow senior Adrienne Evans is the only field player to go the full 90 in all four matches so far this season. Another senior, Teuschl, played 175 of the 180 minutes during last weekend's road trip.

*The assists on Glass' goal two weeks ago went to sophomore Clare Robke—who curled in the cross that Glass headed home—and freshman Mia Fuss. It was the first collegiate point for both players.

*Overall, Coach Turner has played at least 15 players in every match this season including a season-high 18 last Sunday at Lehigh

*Penn went 3-6-7 overall last year, setting a program record for draws in the first season that the NCAA eliminated overtime for regular-season matches. (That rule remains in effect for 2023.)

*Penn had three women score more than one goal a year ago. The two who return, Glass (3 goals in 2022) and Teuschl (2), are already on the scoring ledger in 2023.

*Glass and junior Janae Stewart—who is out with an injury—are the only returning players who saw time in all 16 matches last season, Glass starting 13 times and Stewart five times. However, seniors Ginger Fontenot and Gladu (GK) both started all 15 matches in which they played last season while senior Paige Kenton made 14 starts, Teuschl made 13, and Maya Leschly made 12.

*An honorable mention All-Ivy honoree in 2021 and 2022, Gladu finished last season with a 1.15 goals-against average, playing all but 112 minutes between the pipes. Penn's other returning goalkeeper is sophomore Annabel Austen.

*The team continues to miss Fontenot; a second-team All-Ivy pick last year by the Ancient Eight coaches, she has played just one half this season while battling injuries.'

*Teuschl, meanwhile, was a second-team All-Ivy pick in 2021 after she tied for the team lead in assists (7) and tied for second in points (13).

*Expect to see a lot of new faces playing major roles as the season progresses. Penn added a transfer who started both matches the first weekend—Megan Lusher from Utah—and six of the eight freshmen on the roster have also seen time (Magali Capdevila, Avery Chapel, Mia Fuss, Leah Finkelman, Abbey Cook, Taylor Ferraro) with five of them starting at least once (Cook 3 starts, Ferraro 2, Capdevila 1, Chapel 1, Fuss 1).
