This Series With Yale
Saturday's match will represent the 32nd meeting between the Quakers and the Bulldogs. Yale holds a 14-12-6 lead over Penn, but the Quakers have an 8-2-2 lead over the last 12 meetings. Yale defeated Penn last season in New Haven, 1-0, after the Quakers won 4-0 here in Philly in 2021. The longest winning streak for Penn against Yale has been a four-match span from 2015-18. At home, the Quakers are 6-7-2 all-time against the Bulldogs.
Quakers to Celebrate Pride Night
Penn will celebrate Pride Night on Saturday, showing support for the
Trevor Project and the
LGBT Center on campus. The Trevor Project's mission is to end suicide among lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer & questioning young people. The Trevor Project offers five programs including crisis services, peer support, research, public education and advocacy. The LGBT Center aims to cultivate a campus climate where all students, regardless of their gender or sexual identity, can live authentically. The center also affirms the existence of Penn's LGBTQ+ undergraduates, professional and graduate students, staff, faculty and alumni, fosters success, enriches the experience, and celebrates victories for those who identify within the LGBTQ+ community.
Quaker Notemeal
*Penn started the season 2-0-0 for the first time since 2018 and just the second time since 2015, defeating American and Delaware on Penn Park to start the 2023 campaign.
* At 5-4-1, Penn has already surpassed its win total from last season, when the Quakers went 3-6-7 and set a program mark for ties in a season.
*Penn also is looking to keep its home record intact; the Quakers are 4-0-1 at Penn Park this season.
*Penn's most recent victory came Wednesday night when the Quakers shut out Iona, 3-0. Freshman
Taylor Ferraro, senior
Paige Kenton, and sophomore
Mallory Lucas were the Quakers' goal scorers in a match where Penn outshot the Gaels, 26-2.
*At the other end, senior
Laurence Gladu kept her fifth clean sheet of the season and her 12th at Penn, tied with Caroline Williams (2008-11) for fourth all-time.
*Penn has had seven different goal scorers this season, with Lucas and senior
Lauren Teuschl scoring twice to lead the Quakers.
*
Dr. Krissy Turner is in her second season coaching Penn after 24 years at Monmouth (1998-2021) and three at Lafayette (1995-97). Coincidentally, her 300th win as a head coach came Thursday, September 7, against the Leopards, and she enters the weekend 302-178-53 all-time (.616 win percentage).
*Interesting note: seven of Penn's 10 matches so far this season have ended with a 1-0 scoreline (the exceptions being a 1-1 draw with Villanova on September 14, a 2-1 loss at Temple three days later, and Wednesday's win over Iona.) Last season, four of the Quakers' last six matches also had a 1-0 scoreline.
*So far this season, senior Gladu—a two-time honorable mention All-Ivy pick—has 29 saves while allowing just six goals. She is fourth among Ivy League goalies in both goals against average (0.60) and saves per match (2.90).
*Senior
Ginger Fontenot has been crucial to Penn's back line since her return from injury. The senior was a second-team All-Ivy pick last season and received Ivy League Honor Roll this past week. After a bit of a slow start to the season due to injuries, she has played 494 minutes.
*Expect to see a lot of new faces playing major roles as the season progresses. Lusher has seen extensive time in every match so far and six of the eight freshmen on the roster have also seen time (
Magali Capdevila, Avery Chapel, Mia Fuss, Leah Finkelman, Abbey Cook, Taylor Ferraro) with five of them starting at least once (Ferraro 8 starts, Capdevila 7, Cook 7, Chapel 3, Fuss 1).
