This Series with Iona
This will be the first meeting between the Quakers and the Gaels. Penn has scored six goals this season, with the top scorer being
Lauren Teuschl who has netted a pair this year. Iona has scored two goals this season, with Kedarjah Lewis and Myla Rodrigues each tallying once.
Quaker Notemeal
*Penn started the season 2-0-0 for the first time since 2018 and just the second time since 2015, defeating American and Delaware on Penn Park to start the 2023 campaign.
*At 4-4-1, Penn has already surpassed its win total from last season (when the Quakers went 3-6-7 and set a program mark for ties in a season).
*Dr. Krissy Turner is in her second season coaching Penn after 24 years at Monmouth (1998-2021) and three at Lafayette (1995-97). Coincidentally, her 300th win as a head coach came Thursday, September 7, against the Leopards, and she enters the weekend 301-178-53 all-time (.615 win percentage).
*Interesting note: all but two matches so far this season have ended with a 1-0 scoreline (1-1 vs. Villanova and 2-1 loss at Temple.) Last season, four of the Quakers' last six matches also were decided by 1-0 scores.
*So far this season, senior goalkeeper
Laurence Gladu, a two-time honorable mention All-Ivy pick, has 28 saves while allowing just six goals.
*Ginger Fontenot has been crucial to Penn's backline since her return from injury. The senior was a second-team All-Ivy pick last season and received Ivy League Honor Roll this past week, so far this year she has played 494 minutes.
*The Quakers were shut out for the third time this season at Columbia; the other scoreless outings came against St. Johns and Lehigh on back-to-back matches on August 31 and September 3.
*Overall, Coach Turner has played at least 15 players in every match this season including a season-high 18 at Saint Joseph's. Most recently 16 Quakers saw action against the Lions.
*Penn had three women score more than one goal a year ago. The two who return, Glass (3 goals in 2022) and Teuschl (2), are already on the scoring ledger in 2023.
*Glass and junior Janae Stewart—who is out with an injury—are the only returning players who saw time in all 16 matches last season, Glass starting 13 times and Stewart five times.
However, seniors Ginger Fontenot and Gladu (GK) both started all 15 matches in which they played last season while senior Paige Kenton made 14 starts, Teuschl made 13, and Maya Leschly made 12.
*An honorable mention All-Ivy honoree in 2021 and 2022, Gladu finished last season with a 1.15 goals-against average, playing all but 112 minutes between the pipes. Penn's other returning goalkeeper is sophomore
Annabel Austen.
*Teuschl, meanwhile, was a second-team All-Ivy pick in 2021 after she tied for the team lead in assists (7) and tied for second in points (13).
*Expect to see a lot of new faces playing major roles as the season progresses. Lusher has seen extensive time in every match so far and six of the eight freshmen on the roster have also seen time (
Magali Capdevila, Avery Chapel, Mia Fuss, Leah Finkelman, Abbey Cook, Taylor Ferraro) with five of them starting at least once (Ferraro 7 starts, Capdevila 6, Cook 6, Chapel 3, Fuss 1).
