The Series with Columbia
Saturday's match will represent the 32nd meeting between the Quakers and the Lions, with Penn holding a 14-13-4 lead in the series. Over the last four meetings Penn is 1-3, including three losses in their last three meetings. The last win for the Quakers over the Lions came in 2018, a 1-0 victory at Rhodes Field, including last year Penn dropping the match 2-1 at Penn Park.
Quaker Notemeal
*Penn started the season 2-0-0 for the first time since 2018 and just the second time since 2015, defeating American and Delaware on Penn Park to start the 2023 campaign.
*At 4-3-1, Penn has already surpassed its win total from last season (when the Quakers went 3-6-7 and set a program mark for ties in a season).
*Dr. Krissy Turner is in her second season coaching Penn after 24 years at Monmouth (1998-2021) and three at Lafayette (1995-97). Coincidentally, her 300th win as a head coach came Thursday, September 7, against the Leopards, and she enters the weekend 301-177-53 all-time (.616 win percentage).
*So far this season senior goalkeeper Laurence Gladu, a two-time honorable mention All-Ivy pick, has 27 saves while allowing just five goals.
*The back line was bolstered by the return of senior Ginger Fontenot. A second-team All-Ivy pick a year ago, she played just one half across Penn's first four matches due to injury, but was on the field for all 180 minutes last weekend against Lafayette and SJU, then added 179 minutes against Villanova and Temple.
*Penn's goal scorers last week were Abbey Cook (Thursday vs. Villanova) and Lauren Teuschl (Sunday at Temple). It was the first career collegiate goal for Cook, with Teuschl notching her second of the year. Teuschl is the only multi-goal scorer so far this season for the Quakers.
*Overall, Coach Turner has played at least 15 players in every match this season including 16 against Temple.
*Penn had three women score more than one goal a year ago. The two who return, Glass (3 goals in 2022) and Teuschl (2), are already on the scoring ledger in 2023.
*Glass and junior Janae Stewart—who is out with an injury—are the only returning players who saw time in all 16 matches last season, Glass starting 13 times and Stewart five times. However, seniors
Ginger Fontenot and Gladu (GK) both started all 15 matches in which they played last season while senior
Paige Kenton made 14 starts, Teuschl made 13, and
Maya Leschly made 12.
*An honorable mention All-Ivy honoree in 2021 and 2022, Gladu finished last season with a 1.15 goals-against average, playing all but 112 minutes between the pipes. Penn's other returning goalkeeper is sophomore
Annabel Austen.
*Expect to see a lot of new faces playing major roles as the season progresses. Lusher has seen extensive time in every match so far and six of the eight freshmen on the roster have also seen time (
Magali Capdevila,
Avery Chapel,
Mia Fuss,
Leah Finkelman,
Abbey Cook,
Taylor Ferraro) with five of them starting at least once (Ferraro 6 starts, Capdevila 5, Cook 5, Chapel 3, Fuss 1).
