PHILADELPHIA – the University of Pennsylvania women's soccer team will kick off the 2023-24 athletic season at Penn, as the Quakers host American and Delaware this weekend at Penn Park. Penn and American will kick things off on Friday at 3 p.m., with the Quakers and Blue Hens matching up Sunday at 6 p.m.
This is the second season under head coach Krissy Turner, who enters the 2023 season needing just three wins to reach 300 for her coaching career. Penn vs. American
The Quakers and Eagles are meeting for the ninth time overall. Penn holds a 6-2 lead in the series with wins in the last three matchups. The most recent meetings took place during the 2015 and 2016 seasons and ended with Penn romps, the Quakers winning 5-0 in 2015 and 4-0 a year later.
Penn vs. Delaware
The Quakers and Blue Hens are meeting for the 17th time. Penn leads the series, 10-6, bolstered by wins across each of the last five meetings with four of them coming via shutout. That includes a 1-0 win in 2017 and a 2-0 decision in 2018.
Quaker Notemeal
*Turner is in her second season coaching Penn after 24 years at Monmouth (1998-2021) and three at Lafayette (1995-97). She enters the 2023 season with a career record of 297-174-52 (.618 winning percentage).
*Penn went 3-6-7 overall last year, setting a program record for draws in the first season that the NCAA eliminated overtime for regular-season matches. (That rule remains in effect for 2023.)
*Penn had three women score more than one goal a year ago. Two of them return, junior
Isobel Glass (3 goals in 2022) and senior
Lauren Teuschl (2).
*Three other players return who scored a goal last year: junior
Janae Stewart and sophomores
Anuli Okafor and
Mallory Lucas.
*Glass and Stewart are the only returning players who saw time in all 16 matches last season, Glass starting 13 times and Stewart five times. However, seniors
Ginger Fontenot and
Laurence Gladu (GK) both started all 15 matches in which they played last season while
Paige Kenton made 14 starts, Teuschl made 13, and
Maya Leschly made 12.
*An honorable mention All-Ivy honoree in 2021 and 2022, Gladu finished last season with a 1.15 goals-against average, playing all but 112 minutes between the pipes. She posted two shutouts, giving her seven clean sheets across the last two seasons. Penn's other returning goalkeeper is sophomore
Annabel Austen.
*Fontenot was a second-team All-Ivy pick last year by the Ancient Eight coaches, while Teuschl was a second-team All-Ivy pick in 2021 after she tied for the team lead in assists (7) and tied for second in points (13).
*Expect to see a lot of new faces on the pitch this weekend, as Penn added a transfer to the roster—
Megan Lusher from Utah—as well as eight freshmen (
Avery Chapel,
Magali Capdevila,
Mia Fuss,
Leah Finkelman,
Karly Murlless,
Abbey Cook,
Taylor Ferraro, and goalkeeper
Megan Graves)
