PHILADELPHIA – The University of Pennsylvania men's heavyweight crew opened a weekend of racing with victories against Oregon State in the Varsity Eight and Third Varsity Eight.races on a rainy day Friday on the Schuylkill River.

Varsity Eights
Penn's 12th-ranked boat was able to defeat No. 19 OSU by nearly 10 seconds across a choppy 2,000-meter course on the Schuylkill. The Quakers clocked 5:41.4 while the Beavers were timed in 5:51.3.
 
Second Varsity Eights
Oregon State was declared the winner after Penn was excluded for missing coxswain weight. Penn's 11th-ranked boat was timed in 5:47.6 on the course while No. 16 OSU's time was 6:00.4.
 
Third/Fourth Varsity Eights
Penn's boats swept OSU's 3V8, the Quakers' tenth-ranked 3V8 clocking 5:55.9 while the 4V8 barely nipped the Beavers' 20th-ranked boat by a mere six-tenths of a second.

Penn is back on the Schuylkill tomorrow, hosting Cornell at 8:15 a.m. with the Varsity Eights racing for the Madeira Cup at 9:05. The Quakers will then race against Holy Cross, starting at 12:10 p.m. with the Varsity Eights squaring off at 1 p.m.
